Nigel Wood spotted at Salford Red Devils as new development emerges
The Reds remain under special measures and have now been paid a visit by the RFL's new interim chair.
Nigel Wood is at Salford Red Devils this afternoon. The RFL's new interim chair has been spotted at the Salford Community Stadium and is believed to be meeting with club officials to seek a better understanding of their current position.
The Reds remain in a perilous position, under special measures and forced to play under a £1.2 million sustainability cap as a consequence of their ongoing financial issues. The club, who has now received two central funding advancements recently, paid their players late last month and the significant funding required to get them out of special measures has still not arrived.
CEO Chris Irwin confirmed in an interview with The Sun that the position isn't likely to change in the coming weeks and that, coupled with the other issues the club is facing week-to-week, has seen the situation worsen recently.
The club sold Marc Sneyd last week and as a result of the ongoing uncertainty, there are many players who now want to leave the club. Rival Super League clubs are monitoring the situation carefully.
It's unclear what exactly today's meeting between Wood and Salford is about but there has been an expectation that the former chief executive of the governing body was set to make the situation at the Red Devils a main priority after being appointed as interim chair. That process now appears to be starting today. The saga was discussed in a meeting of Super League owners yesterday.
Salford are due to play Huddersfield Giants on Thursday. They have named a 17-man squad once again though one of those players, Joe Bullock, is injured. Tim Lafai and Nene Macdonald, both linked with exits from the club, are not included.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Hope they didn't lay a buffet on for him. That would have bankrupted them.

Wood being involved in RL shows how backwards thinking the owners are. He oversaw a period of managed decline on the back of his and his team choices.
These are two reasons not to trust people.
1. We don't know them.
2. We do know them.

Five-person panel to lead rugby league's strategic review revealed
Lord Jonathan Caine is among the handful of individuals charged with taking the sport forward after changes at the top of the RFL.
Lord Jonathan Caine is one of the five people who will lead the latest review into rugby league.
Caine, who was chair of the independent panel that adjudicated the bid process for the vacant Super League place in 2020, will be joined by interim RFL chief executive Nigel Wood and ex-London player Abi Ekoku.
Emma Rosewarne, the former long-serving RFL welfare director, and Dermot Power, a retired chartered accountant with experience in rugby union, are also involved.
In a document circulated to clubs, it says the review plan is ‘to produce a transparent strategic business plan that will make the sport an investable, sustainable and economically viable sporting competition by conducting a wide-ranging fully encompassing indepth whole of game strategic review.’
After RFL chair Simon Johnson was ousted last week, Wood is now back at the helm of the governing body.
He has earned widespread support to lead the bid for more change to try and solve some of the sport’s ongoing issues.
In the document seen by All Out Rugby League, Wood writes: “I am pleased to be asked to lead this very important piece of work supporting the sport that everyone cares deeply about and who are totally committed to its future health.
“Every weekend we have excellence served up by clubs and players, up and down the country, and it is important that they receive the very best levels of support.
“The purpose of this review is to examine current performance against plan and to place the sport into the strongest possible position to navigate its future.
“As such the review will consider how we get more people watching, playing and enjoying rugby league in all of its formats.
“I am delighted that such an experienced and passionate group of respected people have willingly offered their time and expertise to achieve this.
“In depth consultation and communication will be paramount throughout this process.
All clubs members and stakeholders will be consulted and regular update meetings will take place to enable contribution of opinion and advice which will enrich the decision making process and the conclusions we reach.
“Ultimately, the sport belongs to us all in whatever capacity we engage it. The overriding common denominator is we all want to ensure its best possible future.”
Some of Ekoku's past roles include time spent as Bradford Bulls CEO, Great Britain RL‐Team Manager and Chairman of the Rugby League Players Association.
Rosewarne, meanwhile, was given a central role in the implementation of the salary cap in the 2006, rolling out the introduction of the live cap, while she led the development of the RFL’s safeguarding policy.
In the spring of 2020, Lord Caine played an important behind the scenes role in helping to secure the Government loan to rugby league that was vital to helping the sport survive through the Covid pandemic.
Along with Wood and Power, they are now charged with rugby league's latest bid for long-term growth.

Re: Nigel Wood spotted at Salford Red Devils as new development emerges
Am I missing something here but isn't this what IMG was brought in to do, are the RFL just paying for the same thing twice, maybe we need a review panel to review the panel set up to do the review, that IMG are currently reviewing.
Re: Nigel Wood spotted at Salford Red Devils as new development emerges
I think it's pretty obvious that IMG are not fit for purpose, having managed to get the RL to pay them a fortune.
Re: Nigel Wood spotted at Salford Red Devils as new development emerges
The outcome will be to get rid of IMG. Nothing else. Waste of time, just do it now.
