I’d agree on freezing him out. It’s hardly cutting off our nose etc. when he can barely get a minute and is relying on 2 or 3 front row injuries/being unavailable before he can be trusted. Want to leave us? Fine. Enjoy Robin Park 6 times for the rest of the year with some academy and reserve only players.
Freezing him out would just be petty. And if we end up in a situation where we do have a prop or two missing and he's the next best option then it is like cutting off our nose if we select someone who isn't as good instead.
These days it happens quite often that a player knows they are joining another club while still playing for another and they generally still give their all as there are still trophies to be won.
No point acting like a spurned lover and freezing him out in a sulk. A strong, well-run side can cope with losing a player or two and should be secure enough to continue to pick the best players available for that year.
The only time I'd say his departure comes into it is if both he and another young player were performing at a similar level and vying for the same place in the side. In that situation it would make sense to go with the player who has a long term future over a short term option.

But getting rid means we are not investing more time in him so Hull can benefit, also it gives Makin a better shot at the first team

What actual 'investment' are we doing that we are not doing with all the other players in the squad, they don't all have a personal trainer showing them what to do, it is a group thing so not like we are doing anything that we would not be doing anyway, yes he may be becoming a better player, but why should we be overly concerned about that, if we can't handle one player getting better and going to a rival club, then it's time to pack in.
He is and will be paid for the year no matter what, get rid early and we still have to pay, keep him and we still have to pay him, the only difference is, he is a good back up player if we get injuries

This is down to the early release of future contracts - I'm certain this would all be played out behind the scenes before.
What hasn't changed is if we sign someone for X years then they can leave at the end of that time and their last season is their last season - Hill is no different to KPP, say, or any overseas player for that matter.
In practical terms, if we need a prop then Hill can be asked to play but it makes perfect sense if Makin is now given more opportunities, Hill will have to take his chances in the Reserves or out on loan?
We should continue to pick players on merit. He's contracted for another year, we need to make full use of our salary cap and if we select players who are not as good just because he's playing elsewhere next year the coach isn't doing his job.
At the moment Walter's form is keeping Hill out of the team.
The only reason we should consider Makin instead of Hill as the next prop is if they are performing pretty similar in training. I'm pretty sure Peet won't select a sub standard player just because of his contract status.
