Salford Red Devils players and staff have been paid ahead of this weekend’s Super League clash with Wigan Warriors. For the second month running Salford players were not paid on time, with pay day coming and going at the Salford Community Stadium without money landing in accounts.
The club released a statement on Thursday night which appeared to challenge the club’s ownership consortium to uphold the commitments they have made and on Friday morning reports emerged that the squad had refused to train.
That decision put Sunday’s clash at the Brick Community Stadium into a degree of doubt, with question marks around the squad’s willingness to perform. Those doubts have been put to bed, though, with players being paid a day late with 48 hours to go until the contest.
It is understood that the money used to pay players and staff has not come from the RFL, unlike last month when the club required an advance from the governing body in order to meet obligations.
The Red Devils haven’t released a squad for the game yet, but Serious About RL has been assured that a Salford squad will be communicated sooner rather than later. What type of squad Paul Rowley will be able to name remains a key question, though, with the head coach claiming earlier this week that he would be down to 15 players this week.
The club are still under the restrictions of a £1.2 million sustainability cap, limiting selection and ensuring a handful of players such as Nene Macdonald are currently ineligible to play.
That cap was placed on Salford for a second time following their failure to pay players last month and since then three high profile stars have left the club. Marc Sneyd and Brad Singleton have left the club to join Super League rivals Warrington Wolves and Castleford Tigers respectively, with Salford receiving a fee for both players. This week saw Tim Lafai leave the club, too, with the Samoan returning Down Under with his family.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Some good news for the Salford lads, they have done it tough this season.
