Smith: Exciting test

* Harry Smith has shared his excitement ahead of a Good Friday Derby against St Helens.

* Smith: “These weeks are the ones you enjoy more as you know you have to prepare to be at your best.”

* Watch previews with Matt Peet and Bevan French on Wigan TV HERE.

HARRY SMITH IS ANTICIPATING AN ‘EXCITING TEST’ AGAINST ST HELENS IN FRONT OF A SOLD OUT THE BRICK COMMUNITY STADIUM THIS GOOD FRIDAY.

The Warriors host great rivals St Helens in a highly anticipated Betfred Super League Rivals Round clash this Good Friday, with home tickets having sold out three weeks in advance.

Smith tasted success as a teenager against St Helens when helping the Warriors lift the 2019 Academy Grand Final following a 22-10 win at the DW Stadium. The half-back started alongside Ethan Havard, as well as Joe Shorrocks and Amir Bourouh, who had been given a taste of Super League action earlier that season.

Reflecting on the Academy success, Smith said: “I’ll always remember that win as a great moment, mainly because we came out on the right side of the result. It was surreal playing at the stadium and in front of a crowd, as we were the curtain raiser for the First Team. We had a very good team that year made up of lads who still play in Super League.”

Speaking on the rivalry whilst progressing through the youth system, Smith said: “From Scholarship to the First Team they’ve always been good games played to a high standard. From the age of 14 you understand how to train – harder and more focused – in Derby week because it’s such a big game and you need to be at your best if you want to win.”

On this week’s focus in training, Smith said: “Matt speaks a lot about not getting too high for any game. You can’t play the game too early in the week because you’ll fatigue yourself. Your emotion leading into the game is mainly focused, and with that comes getting your body ready and working on how you can play well. Hopefully that approach will help us do well on Good Friday.”

On the preparation similarities ahead of the Hull KR win, Smith added: “We had to be at our best against an unbeaten side, top of the league, where their supporters are on top of you throughout. It’s an exciting test to see if we can go again on Good Friday, and these weeks are the ones you enjoy more as you know you have to prepare to be at your best.”

Sharing his excitement ahead of the Derby in front of a sold out crowd, Smith said: “It’s one of the biggest stadiums in the competition that enables you to get massive numbers. The atmosphere starts when you walk through Robin Park Arena and engage with the supporters. You feel their energy which helps on the field as you understand who you are doing this for.”

St Helens 21-man squad for the Good Friday game at Wigan

ST HELENS Coach Paul Wellens has named a 21-man squad for the Good Friday Betfred Super League clash against Wigan Warriors.

There are a number of changes from last week’s squad for the Wakefield game.

Centre Mark Percival is cleared to play after following head injury protocols from the Betfred Challenge Cup quarter final match.

Saints hooker Daryl Clark, who missed out last week with a leg injury, is included, as is Ben Davies who also missed out last week.

James Bell and Harry Robertson are unavailable after suffering injuries in last week’s win over Trinity, with Bell expected to be out for six weeks due to a foot fracture, whilst news of Robertson's scan on his quad has yet to be released.

St Helens’ 21-man squad vs Wigan Warriors.

1. Jack Welsby, 4. Mark Percival, 5. Jon Bennison, 6. Tristan Sailor, 7. Jonny Lomax, 8. Alex Walmsley, 10. Matty Lees, 11. Curtis Sironen, 12. Joe Batchelor, 13. Morgan Knowles, 14. Moses Mbye, 16. Matt Whitley, 17. Agnatius Paasi, 19. George Delaney, 20. Lewis Murphy, 21. Noah Stephens, 22. Ben Davies, 23. Jake Burns, 27. George Whitby, 29. Dayon Sambou.
