Huddersfield Giants and Wigan Warriors Super League fixture set to be hosted by League 1 club

Post by josie andrews »

The Super League fixture between Huddersfield Giants and Wigan Warriors next month is set to take place in Dewsbury. All Out Rugby League has learned that the Giants have requested for the game to take place at FLAIR Stadium, home of the Dewsbury Rams, due to a clash in events at their regular home, the John Smith's Stadium.

The game between the two clubs is scheduled for Saturday, June 14th. However, the John Smith's Stadium is already occupied that day with the Welsh rock band, Stereophonics, performing at the stadium on the same day.

That has resulted in the Giants seeking an alternative venue and they have now asked for ratification from organisers and Sky Sports for the game to take place at the home of the League 1 club. FLAIR Stadium is understood to have a capacity just in excess of 5,000.

The Giants appear set to say farewell to the John Smith's Stadium at the end of the season and relocate to Halifax's Shay Stadium. Owner Ken Davy has outlined plans to build the club a purpose-built stadium which will better suit the size of their fanbase, with the club unable to fill their current home, which has had a negative impact on the atmosphere and their IMG grading score.

Davy's hopes to move to The Shay appear to have taken another step closer, with one of the stadium's current tenants, FC Halifax Town, confirming they have received approval to play in the National League play-offs and play for promotion to the English Football League despite the Giants' move to the stadium.

In a club statement, the Shaymen said: "Following discussions with the EFL and the National League, it is agreed that Halifax Panthers and Huddersfield Giants can play fixtures at the Shay Stadium, along with FC Halifax Town from the 2025-2026 season."

Davy now intends to start the installation of a new pitch, which is set to see Halifax Panthers play home games on the road during the summer.

Good of them to bring a match less than 3 miles from home for me - just a tad further than Elland Road last year. The John Smith stadium is dire anyway. Nice compact ground at Dewsbury. Should be a good atmosphere with 4,000 to 5,000 in there (assuming 75% from Wigan!)

Yes Josh Charnley came off with a serious knee injury he didn’t play for us again 🙁

was going to ask if that was the game - it was straight in front of us and into the metal fencing around the pitch

Little being a hint for possible tactics in terms of field kicking?

I once saw Richard Agar kick (I think) six 40-20s in a Championship play-off game for Dewsbury against Widnes.
