Millward sacked - Post Here

ML backed Millward really stongly very recently and said Wigan don't sack coaches in this position or words to that effect saying no one was calling for Tony Smiths head at Wakey despite (at the time) them being in the same situation as us.

I wouldn't say that Lindsay was backing Millward at all. The interview I heard on Wish FM had Lindsay skirting around the answer like a politician. He wouldn't commit to giving a definitive answer to whether Millwards job was at risk.

In sacking Millward so soon into his contract (<1/3 way through) the board admits that they are not a good judge of coach, are they the best person to choose the next coach? Is a coach going to want to take on the poison chalice if he is living in constant fear of unemployment?

I'm with Doug on the Newton situation. It's quite sad to think about it. I was thinking last night what could've been with Tez and Wagga this year... but there's no use in thinking that way. If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a very Merry Christmas.

I still have no clue how I feel at the moment. 'Despair' could sum it up quite well, cos I just don't know where we're heading.

Well I know how I feel. The club is being run by amateurs. We are the laughing stock of the entire Rugby League world.

Our board are a disgrace, our coach was mystifyingly ineffective and we hear all sorts of awful stories about our players antics, both in and out of work.

Let's face it. False modesty aside, we fans are the only thing this club has to be proud about, but rather than being appreciated we are complacently taken for granted. We always turn up, we always give our hard earned to the club and what do we get? Humiliated. It's just not good enough.

That sums up every sensible fans view of our current situation.If we can to some degree clear the decks then we can move on. Sacking Milly was inevitable but to some degree it was Knee jerk or a half hearted fix to solve the fundimental problems we have at the moment.

I'me with you Jimmy on this one. I don't know what has happened to the club this last few seasons, but I do know we have had to have a good sense of humour and a thick skin. I feel it's about time some one considered the people who pay the wages.

Whoever they get it needs to be a good defensive coach.
The rest of the year is all about keeping them out and scoring on the break

I think Millwards comments after losing at Wakefield put the final nail in the coffin. Even if (hah, if) there are problems at the club, the head coach shouldn't be shouting it to the press. Pehaps he knew he was on his way and that's why he said what he did?

Very good post Jimmy, i would give anything to see you say that in person to Whelan and Lindsay, and see what they have to say.

I don't know which interview you heard. I didn't hear the one you referred to on Wish FM.

The comments from Lindsay I am on about made a direct comparison to Tony Smiths situation at Wakefield and said no one was questioning his position whereas they were with regard to Millward just because it was Wigan.

He then went on to say Wigan were not in the business of sacking coaches just because of the situation we were in. It wasn't a one line throw away comment but he made these points at some length.

I was quite surprised at this because it for a start it doesn't ring true given the clubs past record but he did say stuff like this.

The board did not sign Millward because we didn't have a board last season when he got the job.

The two people who made all the noise about signing Millward were ML & DW. DW in particular was in the media quite a bit about it.

So you could say the board are saying ML & DW are not a good judge of a coach but I very much doubt it because I think at least two men on the board are DW's men and have done his bidding on getting rid of Millward.

John Martin certainly is: he was Whelan's only supporter on the board during the Tesco saga - in fact he (Martin) resigned when R&R went ahead with the Tesco deal instead of Whelan's proposal to renovate CP. I'd assume the Latics guys are Whelan supporters too.
