First match?
Re: First match?
Good topic, i always enjoy thinking back to when i first started watching rugby, i was always a football fan from preston.
My first match was in 1993 against leeds at central park, my sister took me as her new boyfriend was away with work, We WON i got hooked and never looked back. I only missed one home match in the first 2 seasons (which we lost, wakefield at home. we signed henry paul because he won it for them) the group i was with were convinced i was a good luck charm as Wigan always won when i went, that day finally arrived at Salford when we eventually lost a CC match, i can remember still thinking we could win with only a minute left and 12 points behind.
I just wish i was still a good luck charm but i doubt it as ive been a season ticket hold for years.
P.s. does everyone remember the days we used to love hearing "simply the best" i was convinced it was our theme tune

Re: First match?
Don't really remember my first game...my dad used to take me to CP occasionally when I was about 4 and I used to sit on them leaning bars, and then when I was 7 I was taken to the Grand Final which I remember 'cos I had to stand on my chair to see them lift the trophy. Been an almost ever present since the move to the JJB.
........and on the 8th day, God made Wigan Warriors!
Re: First match?
Agreed. Along with that "do wah diddy" drivel we get after a conversion and that ridiculous "I am a warrior" nonsense we come out to for the 2nd half, they need to clear out the jukebox at the JJB Stadium and get some new songs!Doug Stand posted:I hate that song and it's cheesiness.JIMH posted:

Re: First match?
cheers Doug and yes it was a fantastic gameRemember that game well. It ranks as one of the best all time games at Central Park.
Hull-KR were the cream at the time. We had just knocked beat them in the semi-final of challange cup and they were playing to win the league title.
We were down by thee points with only minutes remaining. It could well have been Phil Fords debut at Wigan...anyway Donlan had put us ahead only for us to fall behind. A try from Phil Ford put us back in it, then on the last tackle attacking the kop end, Brett Kenny put his one and only kick for Wigan. An inch perfect kick into the in goal for Phil Ford and we won the match.
Henderson Gill lined up the kick from the touch line. We didn't need it but he put it over anyway...
Great game!

Re: First match?
For a start, why not have the opposition team coming out to the "laughing policeman"? "I am a cheesy 80's popflop warrior" could be replaced by Saxon's "Warrior" ("Warrior came, Warrior saw, Warrior conquered" sounds a bit more fierce than "I am a warrior... oh no, I've broken my nail). After a defeat we could have the Looney Tunes "That's All Folks!" tune...Champions posted:What would you suggest? :tong1:Fraggle posted:Agreed. I'm sure there are lots of songs that could cheers us up a bit.

Re: First match?
Can't remember my first match, but first season was 58/59, in the "hen-pen" at CP.
I vaguely remember sulking 'cos mum & dad wouldn't take me to Wembley in either '58 or '59, saying I was too young!...it was '65 before I finally got to go.
The team in those days was something like:
Griffiths
Boston
Ashton
Holden
Sullivan
Bolton
Thomas
Barton
Sayer
McTigue
Bretherton
Cherrington
Evans

Re: First match?
my first match was 20th august 2004 (yes, i do still have the ticket lol) which was against saints and we won 27-18. i used to watch the odd match on tv with my grandad but that was the first match i ever actually went to. i went to a few more games after that, then became a season ticket holder at the beginning of the 2005 season, and i'm a season ticket holder this season too.

Re: First match?
now im the opposite. i used to love simply the best being played at the end of the games. it was symbolic at the time. i am a warrior i think is a good song, it also turns out we are called the wigan WARIIORS........coincidence? its like at bradford. when they win at home they play nothing's gonna' stop us now by starship. now that song i like and that is also symbolic.Fraggle posted:Agreed.
