Who should we keep if we are relegated?

Post by Exiled Wiganer »

I appreciate that we all hopethat we will be able to turn things around, but in case we don't...

who should we keep hold of in NL1?

I would be keen to keep Ashton, Gleeson, Goulding, Feca, Godwin, Hargreaves, Prescott, Hansen, Hock, O'Louughlin and Tomkins. Plus Barrett of course.

In 2 minds about Higham, Calderwood and Tickle.

I would be happy to help DV, Orr, Richards and Moran pack their bags.

If we go down, all contracts become null and void. The players highlighted in bold will not play for Nl1 wages and will be picked up by other SL clubs or go down under, maybe to the new Gold Coast set up. I include Barrett in that because despite saying he is coming I have changed my mind and expect him to stay put if we go down.

The two in italics may find other clubs in SL and if they get an offer will also leave. Moran will retire.

There is also the possibility that Ashton and Goulding will have done enough to get a slot elsewhere.

In short if we go down we will probably loose all the decent players in your "keep" list, all the ones in your "2 Minds list" and maybe even struggle to keep the ones you want to ship out. (if we wanted to)

The result? NL2 for Wigan in 2008 (well certainly no chance of bouncing back up at the first go).

This is why I say all those who post "If we finsish bottom I want us to be relegated or we will look stupid/never live it down" are mad. I'd do anything to avoid the above scenario and would gladly accept any excuse for our SL status being preserved even if we didn't win another game.

I can help you with that if ya want? Why is he not playing Higham at scrum half?

Moran I might agree with - even though he was our top try scorer last season - but IMO we looked miles better defensively in the backs with DV's return.

I assumed that we would make it clear to the RFL that if we are relegated, we will only accept a salary cap based on half of the income we can generate (ie virtually as much as we pay out already). While I can sort of accept the logic of a cap in SL, dragging us down to the level of the Batleys of this world for a level playing field, with the attendant risk we may not bounce back first time is insanity.

The club cannot afford not to challenge this. It is unenforceable at law.

Isn't this what Cas did?

If we sort that small matter out then we must be looking to retain the core decent players we already have...

Sorry yeah i agree with you on that one. I think noble might tighten up the whole defence icluding DV.

If Wigan Warriors end up in NL2 everyone would just jump on the bandwagon and join my club.
