Shocking Behaviour !

Post by Saint Whitey »

I can honestly say that for the first time during 30 years of watching Rugby League I am totally shocked. I went to the Wigan - Saints game on Saturday with a few friends who are Wigan fans (I am a Saints fan obviously) and we were subjected to the most disgusting abuse I have ever seen at a Rugby League match. We were in the East Stand and shortly after Saints scored the first try I was told by a few so called fans around me to F*** Off to the Saints end of the ground, this carried on until these so called fans decided to start throwing drinks over us. This culminated in one fan desperately trying to jump over seats to get towards me, clearly full of rage and without doubt trying to initiate violence.
The most disappointing fact about all this is the fact hat that our sport prides itself on its family appeal, I like many other have spent hours on end over at Central Park totally amongst Wigan fans and without incident. I am so disappointed that this behaviour is creeping in to Rugby League and hope that the mindless thugs who behave like this are weeded out from Rugby League grounds before we end up with a reputation like the round ball crowd!

I am honestly disgusted by what happened to you on saturday, i myself have a season ticket along with my three kids in the east stand and i have never witnessed that sort of behaviour until saturday. My seven year old son was verbaly abused by a saints fan,(he was a bloke of around fifty). This sickened me and he got a peice of my mind. We were there with friends who are saints fans and he still had a go. I too feel that it's very disappointing to have this sort of abuse hurled about, and we have to realise that it's not just one sided! :(

Agree completely. I didn't see the incident from where I was (middle of the East) but that's the sort of thing the stewards should be dealing with, rather than Max's kids.
There are always going to be the mindless minority at any club, but they do need weeding out.

I was in the East stand too there not far from the incident and alot of Wigan fan's were not impressed at what happened too.
Please don't think we are all like that because we're not!

As GeoffN points out, these sorts of incidents are for the stewards to sort out.

Were either incident reported to them?

Even if they were not, they should be on the look out for this sort of thing and act accordingly.

I would complain to the club if I were (either of) you as I am pretty sure they will want to know about this sort of thing and take action to nip it in the bud.

In fact I would urge Saint Whitely to do just that because if things like this go unreported they can't be dealt with. It is no use posting on here about it if the club remain ignorant of what went on. This is not an official web site so it needs reporting directly to the club.

There is a form on the official club site you might try:

http://www.wiganwarriors.com/Contact.asp

I am sure we'd all be interested to know the clubs reaction.

Don't know if it's "selective memory" but I don't remember that sort of thing happening at CP. We used to go on the Kop, mostly, and mix happily with the away fans (of any club) without any bother apart from the usual banter.
I don't mean it to sound like a "things weren't like that in my day..." ......but they weren't!

And I'd say there were a lot fewer stewards at CP, compared to the JJB, even in the days when crowds were much bigger.

Couple of seasons ago I was with a mate who's a Leeds fan and stood with him at Leeds end (well opposite scoreboard, it's never been totally the 'Leeds' end). He always sits at Wigan end if he comes to JJB, that's the deal.

Anyway, we scored, I let out a muffled, 'yes!' and was charged by an idiot about 5 people in front. He was grabbed by his mates and spent the rest of the match mumbling about 'after the game'. Anyway, for some reason he came up and apologised at the end, to my relief.

Not sure why I've just posted that story, but there you go...

I was sat just behind you and saw the whole incident. A steward did come up to see what had happened. But apart from that i don't think anything was done? But i could be wrong. My girlfriend wanted to leave early but i persuaded her to stay because the guy seemed to have left.

I used to stand with my friend in the away stand, the only time my mum wouldn't let me go off on my own was when we played Oldham. Gawd those 'women' were scary.
