Salary Cap
The 20 / 20 is being changed to 20 / £25,000. No movement on £1.7 million though

Re: Salary Cap
progress, of sorts...but it should be 25/25 IMO...and closer to £2m total.cpwigan posted:

Re: Salary Cap
I agree, it's the remaining "20" bit that gets me. How many teams go through an entire season using just 20 players? Anyone outside that is still expected to take the same hits, put in the same effort etc as someone earning lots of money. I know some of our 37 squad members haven't played first team, but there's a lot of people in that group who have been expected to perform at first team level but on a salary much below 1st team pay.GeoffN posted:progress, of sorts...but it should be 25/25 IMO...and closer to £2m total.cpwigan posted:

Re: Salary Cap
I would go with your ideas myself 25/25 and £2 million
I daresay the problem is that the 'lesser clubs' will not want it and prevent it happening.

Re: Salary Cap
Ideally I'd like to see the 20/20 (or whatever the figures) scrapped completely. As far as I can see, it simply acts against clubs producing their own talent, and has no redeeming features.
Why can't clubs be allowed to spend their cap however they wish - whether on a relatively large but lower paid squad, or a smaller, higher paid one (gambling on few injuries)?

Re: Salary Cap
True Geoff but the smaller clubs love it because it limits the number of players that the best clubs can retain and they can then act like vultures picking players off. The 20/£25,000 helps them to carry on being parasites. Hence, they voted for it.
Re: Salary Cap
They'd be better off if they concentrated on bringing up their income so they could spend the full amount. Can't blame success (or lack of it) for getting decent attendances - our attendances have been increasing every season, despite our league positions going steadily downhill.cpwigan posted:

Re: Salary Cap
Well the cap is £1.75 million for this year (source the RFL) and it is supposed to be index linked so it ought to go up next year automatically.cpwigan posted:

What is the source of your information? I had an email conversation with the club accountant at the RFL a while back about the salary cap and it was him who told me it was indexed linked.
As to the 20/20 or 20/25 its just a stupid inflexibel rule that has far more negative consiquences than positives ones.
