Statement regarding the RFL independent judiciary panel hearing relating to Wigan Warriors

MONDAY - 7th August 2006

At a meeting of the RFL independent judiciary panel, the Wigan Warriors club has been found guilty of breaching the 2005 Super League Salary Cap.

The panel found that the Wigan club had a Salary Cap of between 52 and 55 per cent at the end of 2005 and therefore, in accordance with the RFL’s Operational Rules, has suffered a penalty of the deduction of two competition points.

The panel also found that in the course of the breach, the Wigan club was guilty of conduct prejudicial to the interests of the game. They have been fined £50,000 plus costs in respect of this.

The Wigan club pleaded guilty to both charges in the course of the hearing

Both penalties take immediate effect and thus the deduction of competition points applies to the current 2006 engage Super League competition table.

An officially revised table will be published in due course
I was under the impression that the £50,000 was for the salary cap breach. In light of this statement serious questions need to be asked and answered.

Does anyone know how much Mickey Higham's wages are? this £80,000 sounds like a conveniently round figure and the obviously strange dealings that we have been fined for could well be to do with the Higham/Newton transfer which was a little unusual to say the least....
mickey hiham as only played for us this year ,so this dosnt come under last years cap

The club's keeping quiet about the details, too. All the official site has is a copy of the RFL statement, with no explanation.
We need to be told what the "conduct prejudicial" was, exactly.

If Whelan had employed this fat fool in one of his shops he would have sacked him ages ago. Lindsay hasn't got the decency to resign. I wonder if Whelan has the guts to sack him?

Saints Guilty for 2ND time fined £5,ooo
Hull Guilty fined £4,000
Wakefield Guilty given a warning
Castleford Guilty given a warning
Wigan Guilty Deducted Two points fined £50,000

Now there is a table of fair play if you are found guilty we deal out equal punishment :eh: :eh:

They must have known they had breached the salary cap as they pleaded guilty .

:( I may be wrong but I am mystified. I think the RFL get every clubs accounts in November. How/why has it taken this long for all this to surfarce? You need to be punishing clubs prior to the 2006 season commencing NOT with 5 games to go. What if they had done this with say 1 game left etc? If it takes this long to deal with 2005 then who is to say people will not deliberately cheat to survive in 2006 knowing that they will not get punished until well into the 2007 season.

It certainly seems that if it is Wigan be it the disciplinary, be it the salary cap then the punishment is always greater than what other clubs receive.

I hate the salary cap.
