Retire the Number 1 Shirt

Post by The Wigan Kebab »

If it were just down to being 'an all time great' I rekon we would have retired shirts from No.1 to No.13 by now. But in my opinion Kris has gone above and beyond the call of duty for us (twice now including Murrayfield) and because of this should be recognised in a way that no other player has yet been recognised. So I reckon we get Mo's email address (has anybody got it?) and spam him till he agrees. What do you think?

:( So what number would you give Chris Ashton next year then?Appreciate that Kris has done wonders for the club but each crop of players deserves the right to wear 1 - 13 regardless of whose worn that number before. :(

Correct.
The poster formerly knows as Wizard_Millward.

I wasn't as fit or strong as before but my two biggest muscles still worked - my heart and my head - Kris Radlinski.

What a silly idea! If that was the case every "all time great" s shirt would be retired. Chris Ashton deserves to wear that shirt. Unfortunately everybody has a shelf life and its time to pass the role onto someone else. Rads was a great but his shoes are going to be filled by a future "all time great".

However, I remember Ray Price after his last test match handed Wayne pearce his number 13 jersey to symbolise that Australia had found a worthy successor. Maybe Rads handing his 1 shirt to Ashton would be better.

All a wee bit sentimental and setting a precedent, but I'd rather see Kris handing over his number one shirt than Geordan Murphy handing him a stripy one with 15 on the back

Overly sentimental & an insult to former greats like Jim Sullivan ( Dad's fave ) & George Fairbairn ( mine ).

If we'd gone down the road of retiring shirt numbers every time a half decent player retired, we'd be playing with letters on our backs by now, like the Leicester RU team...........

Though in a previous post i have said that some were praising Ashton on a good run over the last 2 months in the poll of the player of the season.

1 thing he has earned is the NO.1 shirt.

Can we stop the Americanaisation of everything. What would this achieve nothing.

The NO1 goes to Rads succesor and thats Ashton.
