Actually I am a rugby league / football person. My comments were jovial. I played more football than rugby but found rugby better to watch.

However, as the details are revealed. Guess what. Our free ticket is to the Wigan v Watford match. This match is potentially the lowest attendance at the JJB for the Latics. So the cynic in me says a geniune promotion or a face saver. If they really wanted to attract Warriors fans to the Latics they would have chose Man U, Liverpool etc. No doubt the Latics fans will be offered the delights of Catalan / london which are our equivalent of Watford.

When and where were these tickets given out?

I heard a few people complaining about them giving out Latics tickets and it just confirmed my theory that theres a lot of RL fans that like to moan about anything and everything just for the sake of moaning. I agree with Latics_01, its pathetic and childish.

It may genuinely be an effort by Mr. Whelan to bring the two crowds together, but the perception at present is that it's an effort to boost Latics' attendance for the Watford game, and this latter theory is one that my Latics-following neighbour subscribes to wholeheartedly.

He thinks the novelty of Premiership football is already wearing off, and is worried that while there'll be no problem getting fans in to the big matches - Liverpool, Man U etc - he fears that crowds for the less glamorous fixtures may be quite embarrassing.

He also, incidentally, blames a resurgence of interest in the Warriors for this, but I'm not entirely sure. Every pub I went into after the match last night was filled with Cherry and White - something I haven't seen in Wigan for quite a while - but there were many among these who used to go watching Wigan years ago and then stopped when we moved to the JJB. I think these are true Wigan fans at heart, who've come out of the woodwork in our hour of need, not Latics fans who've suddenly and inexplicably switched alliegances.

For what it's worth, someone told me last night that there are estimated to be about 1,000 fans who regularly watch both teams. Not sure where he got that figure from, but it sounds safe.

I think you have to pick up your tickets in the next week or so. They were not handing them out. It is just too big a coincidence that the very match is v Watford for this to be anything but a marketing ploy.

So you collect them from the ticket office with your season ticket?

I would imagine his tactic is to entice Warriors fans to watch the football and at the same time boost the crowd for one of the smaller games.
