I do not know what it is like to work for Whelan. I have only heard bad things about how he treats his staff but after saying that he can offer whatever he likes from the minimum wage or above, that is his right and he is not breaking any rules. If people don’t like it then they have an option to go elsewhere, this is the stark fact.

Now after saying all that I think the people who work there work hard and should be rewarded for their work, it also helps moral and better production and in my view it would make me feel better if I was Whelan knowing I have done a decent thing in life that will not break me.

The best bit about Whelan is the spin that he went from a market stall to sports shop giant. No mention of how he married into a wealthy family who owned the only supermarket in Wigan at the time.

JJB workers do not get treated very well BUT alas that is the way it is in Britain these days. I am sure if it was possible all our jobs would be exported to India.

Whelan deserves the freedom of the town, for all he has done in the community. He has every right to pay his employees what he likes... if they dont like it, they get sod off to another job. Theres a topic relating to this on rlfans (which I hate now) and I stressed that JJB staff moan all the time and should shut the hell up.
whilst I respect your right to your opinion , when you tell people to sod off and get another job, what is the job situation in the area , most retail jobs pay rubbish wages.
Do you work for minimum wage ? if not why not if you think it is good pay. I don't and certainly won't. or would you rather see oversea's workers brought in who would do it even cheaper?

On a serious note, it seems harder and harder these days to get a job with decent pay. look in the newspapers and there are only low paid jobs by and large. Bit sad really :(

I grew up from mining stock and cripes even as a teenager the miners strike was an awful feeling.

put it into perspective, the rich get richer the workers get shafted, and thanks to todays law no recourse, against unscrupulous employers,
