The salary cap has a big part to play. In this situation Wigan couldn't match HKR's offer! I suspect the club had to decide whether to increase the offer to Goulding or invest in another player. Tough decisions need to made regarding who to retain and who we should let go. Obviously, the players sometimes decide that they want to leave the club it then comes down to whether the club make the player adhere to their contract or not (we know from past experience where the club stands on this, particularly if a healthy transfer fee can be negotiated!). It is obviously annoying when one of our juniors leave after years of coaching investment, but players are in this game primarily for the money and will therefore seek the best deal, the RFL need to support clubs that invest in youth by offering financial incentives e.g. relaxation of the salary cap rules or making clubs pay a transfer fee for any player that signs for another SL club if he is under 23.

Would you be upset if Goulding went and Wigan extended Hampshire's contract?

The problem is that we are not well stocked in the centres, we have a number of players who get chosen in that position but don't have the necessary skills to full fill the role.

I think the club has an over inflated opinion of itself in terms of its ability to replace good players with either young players from the academy or 2nd rate players who no one on this forum would sign until we sign them.

Rovers seal Goulding signing

Hull Kingston Rovers have made their first new signing for next season with the capture of Wigan Warriors centre Darrell Goulding on a three-year contract from 2015.

The 26-year-old will finish the current campaign with the reigning Super League and Challenge Cup winners before linking up with the Robins for pre-season training in November.

An ex-England international, Goulding has racked up more than 150 top flight appearances for his hometown club since his debut in 2005 and has twice appeared in both the Grand Final and the World Club Challenge with the Warriors.

Adding considerable experience to the Robins’ backline from next season, the former Wigan St Patrick’s amateur says he can’t wait to get started at the KC Lightstream Stadium.

He told www.hullkr.co.uk: “I think I needed a new challenge at this stage of my career and there were a few clubs interested. I spoke to them all but the ambition at Hull KR really stood out.

“Speaking to Craig Sandercock and Chris Chester, it’s definitely a club that’s going places and the fact they wanted me so much was a really good feeling to have.

“I’d love to repay their faith in me by coming over and getting back to my best form again. It’s a new opportunity and one that I think will probably reignite me.

“I’ve been fortunate to be part of a lot of success at Wigan and that’s something I’d love to replicate at Rovers. I’d love to be pushing for success over the next couple of years and there’s no reason why we can’t.

“I’m also looking forward to the challenge of being one of the more experienced players in the outside backs and working with some of the young guys at the club as well.”

Meanwhile, Hull KR’s head coach Craig Sandercock said he was delighted to add Goulding to his squad for the next three years.

He added: “He has been there and done that in terms of winning competitions and Challenge Cups and it's a pleasure to have a thorough professional join our club.

“He is a big game player and I'm really looking forward to working with him.”

IL has this notion that players can play at Wigan and have success for less money than they can get elsewhere. He believes Wigan is such an institution that players want to play for us and have that success and as opposed to playing elsewhere, not having that success but earning more money.

RL is a short career and as we have seen with Hansen and now Goulding, there comes a time when they have to put their families first and go to who is offering more money.

Wigan Warriors today confirm that Darrell Goulding will leave the Club at the end of his current contract in November 2014.

Goulding, 26, came through the famed Wigan youth development system and he made his debut in 2005. In 2009 he spent half a season on loan at Salford before returning to the Warriors where he cemented his position in the First Team, helping the Club to the 2010 Grand Final success, 2011 Wembley victory and Double triumph of 2013.

Speaking about leaving his hometown Club Darrell said:

"I feel honoured that I have been able to represent this great club for so long. It was always my dream as a child to play for my hometown club. I've seen many highs and lows at Wigan but it's great to see where the Club is at now and the direction it is heading.

"To win trophies with such a special group of friends is a feeling quite indescribable and I'd love to finish my time at the Club in the same way with another Grand Final ring.

"I'm looking forward to the next chapter of my career and hope it can be as memorable as my time at Wigan. Lastly I want to thank every single person at the Club and all the fans - It's a truly remarkable Club and I'm sure we will always be friends for life."

Rugby General Manager Kris Radlinski added:

"I would like to thank Darrell for everything he has given to the Wigan Club over the years. He was open and honest when we sat down to discuss his future and we respect that he has reached the stage in his career where he needs to try something different with a new challenge.
