"D-D-D-Dougie" Laughton worthy of a mention too, imo. John Joyner at Cas, quite a few others

Dougie Laughton, Dave Robinson and Bill Ashurst, how good were they in the early 70's?
John Joyner for Cas ruined a good few weekends for Wigan fans and at least one midweek CC match. Brilliant player at either loose forward or stand off.
Reckon SOL is the last of that breed of ball playing loose forwards who can turn a game on its head with a pass or break out of the blue.

Always admired Mick Adams. Good solid LF But for ball handling and tactical nous Bill Ashurst for me was supreme. Mainly played 2nd Row but such was his skill level nay genius L F would have been fodder for him. A Great Player the best I've seen ever (going on 60 years. A few lapses re discipline

but sheer class

I love a bit of subtle understatement!
Sorry to digress, but this is well worth reading re "Sash":

I seem to remember Ashurst started at centre for Wigan prior to shifting to second row.
