He's not remotely OK but since when has merely being "OK" been acceptable at Wigan? Even in the era of the salary cap a team paying to the full amount as we are should not have players in its starting 13 where the debate is how close to "OK" they are.
If Gildart goes to Saints they would have a centre pairing of Percival and Gildart. That would be so much better than ours it is embarrassing.
If Gildart is allowed to leave because Wigan won't match what Saints offer then they are going to have to pay more just to stand still. Good players won't move clubs for peanuts so there is no cheap option here. There is no real quality in SL to be had on the cheap and an overseas player will be expensive.
It seems to me it's about time the club realised even young players like Gildart who granted hasn't had the best season so far can command decent wages and they aren't always going to find a Hardaker who they may think they can get to replace them out of pure luck for less money.

Pretty much every wigan team in history, aside from the peak buy everyone years around 1990 has had ok players. So, the answer is probably since the 1900 ok has been good enough for us with some players.
He hasn’t gone anywhere yet. If Saints pay more than we think he is worth, they would have to pay less alsewhere. If we pay over the odds we will need to cut elsewhere. That’s how the cap works.

if we are being honest every team needs the unsung heroes to compliment the stars. as you say if we look through our history every side has had them in there. some of my personal favourites are the unsung grafters who you could rely on week in week out. My problem is that there are too many players like that now in the side. Whether that is the current standard of SL or the way the game now appears to be robotically coached and the skill dumbed down out of the players i am not sure, but we certainly need some x factor to compliment
i have also heard that Saints have offered more than Wigan, whether its true or not i dont know, but in the era of the agent trying to get the best for their player it could cerainly be untrue to push his Wigan value up (he's off to oz, he's off to Saints, its all in the press etc etc)
this is also where i dont like the cap. i'm not saying it should be unlimited but if clubs can afford to pay then allow them to so that we can retain / attract star players. under the current system as you've said if you pay someone a higher salary then undoubtedly you've got to cut it somewhere else which is usually letting a player go and bringing another youngster through
Re gildart its a difficult one. he has a lot of potential. is he the best centre we've ever had - no, but he is a long way from the worst and i feel he will only get better with age. If we let him go we will probably have to pay out a similar if not larger salary to attract a natural centre to the club, so financially does it really make sense to let him go, unless there is a youngster ready to take his spot?

The "OK players" from past Wigan sides including the 1990's would be superstars in this era.
I think though we are losing sight of the fundamental issue here though and that is Sarge is not even remotely OK. He is boarding on the incompetent at times. The sooner his contract is up and we get shut the better because I can't believe the club will be stupid enough to renew it.

Exiled is spot on yes the 90s teams had super stars but they also had players who would have been average in less talented teams.

It's all relative to the era. Mick Cassidy would have been a star player in our current side yet he was not considered top drawer in his era.
Even so, I don't see why that excuses players with such obvious weaknesses as Sarge being in the starting 13 or even at the club at all.

Ged Byrne - superstar![/quote]
Ged won every honour in the game & played well above his body weight - ask Ronnie 'The Terminator' Gibbs about this when he played for Cas v Wigan at Central Park.
Ellery Hanley described Ged as the best defensive back he ever played alongside.
Graham Lowe wanted Ged to join Manly in the, then, British RL off season owing to his utility value.
And your point was?

My point was that its a bit of a reach to consider that Ged would be a superstar in todays game. We've had plenty of players that did a job but we never going to be world class and there is nothing wrong with that.
He was 40 a day man who didn't like training and worked as a window cleaner on the side.
He was one of my favourites!

And a cracking pianist, Les Dawson style.
