Having done athletics myself as a youngster, I have always taken an interest in our speedsters. Preston was timed at 10.7 over the 100m as a young bloke and Offiah always maintains this was about as fast as he himself could go on the track, but he had a remarkable ability to change pace and expend just enough energy to keep ahead of his chasers, a very graceful runner. Since the days of these two I would hazard our fastest players have included Dallas, Carney, Darren Williams and Rob Smyth (I ran against the former) both English Schools sprinters. Calderwood looks very rapid and Colbon is certainly fast.
Incidentally Denis Betts famously ran 11.1 for the 100m as a teenager and Steve Renouf was a sub 11 second 100m man in his early days with Brisbane

I'm glad that someone posted stats on Preston because IMO he was as fast as anything I have ever seen. Someone posted that Offiah was by far tha quickest which obviously isn't quite true. Also, someone posted that Offiah outran Preston once, thereby proving who was quickest. This also is inconclusive, since it merely prove who was fastest on the day, and even then if they had a level start, etc.
It's always a difficult on to answer but I think it would have been extremely close between the 2 of them. I do recall a try Preston scored in a friendly match at what was Hilton Park and I swear it was the fastest thing I ever saw on a rugby field.
Finally, I believe Preston left us for Halifax because we were about to go full time and he didn't want to quit his job.

Just wondering, with Darren Albert now disapeared off the scene at Saints, is Brett Dallas now the fastest man in super league?
Richards was the fastest in the NRL a couple of years ago...not sure if that is still the case.

You should open them as you come onto the M6 from the M62, it shows Wigan as beating Saints!
Although Preston were beating us and Blackpool hammering everyone!

Preston left us as we signed Davis Myers ( i think thats his name). Offiah had the ball and Preston still couldnt catch him. Preston was still nice to watch though.

I think the Dennis Betts one is a red herring. I played football against him and he wasn't out of the ordinary speed wise and I think even when he came into the Wigan first team, Andy Goodway was faster.
Darren Williams is a good shout though
McDonald Bailey and a few other athletes were brought into the game years ago but none excelled from memory. Last example I know of was Darren clark, an Aussie athlete signing for Balmain when Alan Jones coached them. As somebody pointed out it's speed + ability to change direction etc.
Ellery Hanley was the fastest sideways runner I've ever seen
A lad called Lee Odenryun beat Offiah in a pre match sprint off. Alan McIndoe and Robbie Beckett looked quick too. Andrew ET was an excellent athlete pre rugby days.

offiah is the fastest. my dad and grandad both agree and both strong rugby league wigan fans. they sed if you gave offiash the ball in front of a defence he would pass. but if you gave ihm the ball infornt of a defender he wud just p!@; all other them and scip past them
