Seems to imply that whoever posts the alleged libel is responsible, but not Mike or his ISP.
but:
"So long as they didn't know the information to be libellous, didn't select the recipient of the information and they remove defamatory information as soon as they have been made aware of it, then they are not liable."

(which, apparently, includes moderators!)

"People who do edit and monitor posts on their sites would not have this defence but would be more likely to spot libellous statements themselves."
And people think we mods do nothing!

I think you're right about the general statements, no individuals are explicitly named as saying or doing (or not saying or doing) anything in particular, but we've had one or two "I heard from a friend of a friend that so-and-so was in the pub causing trouble with..." type messages and that kind of thing we'll have to remember to challenge for facts or delete.

Don't get distracted by the mention of "individual". Libel also applies where the defamatory statement is made about a (usually fairly small) group of easily identifiable people. So you could libel the Wigan team, for instance but probably not the whole rugby league-playing fraternity.

I.e. if you said (purely as an example) "all Leeds players do rude things with sheep" and they objected, it could be libel as they are a relatively small group of easily identifiable individuals. If you said the same thing about "everyone in Yorkshire" it wouldn't be a problem as there's too many of them.

There's also a defence of "justification" which basically means what you said is true  .... but you'd better be able to prove it.

True, especially as Yorkshire folk probably think "libel" is something on their clothes with washing instructions written on.... (/fraggle awaits label claim for the entire population of Puddingland...)

No, that would be southerners. You know, the people who wash their hands in a bison.

A Yorkshire man was speaking to his vet and said, "My cat's feeling poorly."

The vet replied "Is it a tom?"

The Yorkshire man said, "No I've brouhgt him with me!"

A Yorkshire man took his dog to the vet

The vet looked at the dog and asked "Whippet?"

The Yorkshire man replied, "No! I've bought it"
