I'd take the M6 upto Penrith (J40) if I were you, it's a lot much easier drive then getting off at J36 and contending with all them bends and fell roads. There seem to be a high proportion of lorries on there too considering the type of roads.
I went via hardknot pass once. not for a rugby match... i 'thought' it was quicker even though ive hiked up there many a time, i thought a car would quickly get me from ambleside area to whitehaven easily... i thought wrong.

I quite like the place myself. Shame about the chemical factory though.

The chemical plant is more or less closed down now.

There are some right wierdos there though, such as the Mark Calderwood Appreciation Society who sits on Row C of the East Stand near the 40 m line. That Willie C's alright for a Bongo though :wink:
