There are a lot of factors that affect the performance of a player.Wigan Watcher posted:
No Dave you are wrong here, I have never said Fielden was a prop and only described him as a top player and always stated he is a second row player
As far as this saying goes and I know it is said a lot, I don’t agree with it!
Both form and class are temporary.
Form over time is lost and so is class, you can’t say watching Andy Gregory he is a class scrum half at this present moment, but he was once!
If you take class to mean a players skill, knowledge of rugby and natural ability then I would say that in terms of sporting career that is permanent. Andy Gregory is still probably just as good with a rugby ball as he was when playing for Wigan, I’m sure he still has a great rugby mind and natural ability can not be questioned.
Form on the other hand can be affected by a lot, physical condition is a major one of these, if you do not have the fitness you can not play to your best but if that player regains that fitness then they can return to their best. Andy Gregory is not going to start playing rugby again because rugby requires a high level of fitness that many people over 30 can not achieve. You could argue that if class was permanent then why do some people start of brightly and then fade, well the ability is still there but for what ever reason they are not able to show it.
In the case of Stuart Fielden his form has been poor perhaps due to his knee injury, the death of his mother, a tough season and the list can goes on but if Fielden keeps fit and regains his confidence then he will be just as good as he was a few years ago. I certainly do not think that Fielden is at the stage were age is a major factor in his playing ability.
