You've asked me before Rob - and (as I said before) I am afraid I lack the temperament - furthermore I make no excuses for the fact that I would be pro-Wigan and vehemently anti-stains. In short I would be a terrible referee! Does that mean that I am unable to read the game and understand/interpret it's rules? or voice an opinion?

After serving as a doorman for nearly ten years I am all too familiar of what it is like to always be in the wrong (in some people's eyes) and to suffer a mountain of abuse with little chance for reply.

I have had to make snap decisions under pressure (probably more pressure than the average ref as they aren't in any real danger!) and on occasion I have made mistakes - however I fully admitted them when I was in the wrong; something that most refs seem unable to do!

Furthermore I live in Gloucestershire and there's not a lot of RL around here!

Not at all, but as you've admitted, you're biased against Saints so every decision he gave for them you'd not like.

That's interpretation... you can't interpret that a referee doesn't admit errors.

I'm not a massive leeds fan either (great surprise there) and as Wigan have to beat both teams if they are going to win SL (which I think is highly unlikely; however much I want them to) it didn't really matter to me who won tonight.

IMO the penalty should not have been given - even stevo thought it was a mistake.

And as for him being "afraid" of the knee coming at him why didn't he pull the ball towards his chest to defend himself - rather than limply dropping the ball on the floor!

I have - including an absolute beauty at a local RU match where the fullback kicked the ball into the next field and the ref claimed it was touched - even though the nearest opposing player was ten metres away. When I asked him at the end of the match he tried to tell me that it was the linesman's call - which was strange as I was stood near the linesman at the time and he tried to tell the ref he had got it wrong...

That's not even the same sport. In amateur games you do get some referees that will try and justify blatent errors, that's often why they're refereeing amateur games though. They'll never improve if they don't accept mistakes.

Of course... in every game I do. Hopefully they are small errors though. Last weekend two defenders were offside, I shouted them to give them opportunity to keep out of the tackle, as soon as they touched the ball carrier I blew my whistle for offside. The ball carrier steamed straight through them with just the line and sticks in front of him. He was about 40 m out and I suspect he would have been tackled but he wasn't happy. I just said sorry and explained myself as I have to you.

The other week I had a game where the conditions were wet, there was a lot of messing about at the ruck and players drifting offside. I was standing 2-3 men in from the ruck at PTBs to try and control the offsides, in moving away from the ruck I was reducing my visibility of hands in at the ruck. I spoke to the coaches after the game (as I always make a point of doing), both said they thought there were a couple of knock-ons / ball steals they didn't agree with. The following week I stood 1 man in at the ruck and got a perfect view of all hands in. With the offsides I just concentrated on the men nearest to me.

If I didn't do my reviews I'd never improve, same for any referee.
