To be fair, although the lad is young anticipating break downs in defense / where the attacking kick may be placed and positioning accordingly is one of the facets of the Full Back role......so I believe.

I played 2nd row for years and didn't see my full back from one set to the next...unless I missed a tackle that he cleaned up (not often!)then he let his presence be felt! :D

...actually I can remember nearly all that team bar the fullback  anyone on here play / know the Leigh East U19's from '93-'95?

Are we saying that Ashton should be thinking ahead, i.e, standing at full back and always thinking to himself, "what will happen is so and so makes a mistake? WHat do I do if so and so makes a mistake"?
2 words, kris radlinski.

both incomparable maybe except for support play, but look at radlinski, he knew what the opposing team were gonig to do before they did it. Ashton needs to be a step ahead, it's all part of being a full back, you need to anticipate what will happen next and position yourself correctly for the play.

You say psycho that Ashton needs to be a step ahead, you mean that for some reason his development is not as far ahead as it should be?

not as such, for a 19 year old he is a talent, but at times on the field it seems his 'cool head' isn't in the place it should be. his positioning is questionable as is his defense and if he wants to make it as a fullback, he needs to improve his awareness and reading of the game.

How can you tell by watching him that is head isn't in the right place?

I know he gives away a couple of daft penalties away by doing silly things like flops, and being sin binned etc, but do you count that or is it something that I am missing?

flops, penalties, bad positional play, bad defense, mistakes.

that's why his head isn't in right place.

I kind of got the hang of your point then with saying that he gives away flops, penalties, sin binnings etc.

Mind you, he hasn't done this for a while in fact, I have noticed that his discipline has improved tremendously.
