It was a poor decision especially given the fact that we chose to kick at goal in the second half. Why did our strategy change? Kicking at goal would have changed the game and therefore possibly the result.

I'm not so sure. Even in a tight game, I'm more in favour of running it (unless there are only seconds left on the clock). I was actually relieved last night when Dobson kicked for goal at 12-all.
