More than sponsors, as they put in a lot of money into the building of the Stadium in conjunction with the Council and that is why it is called the KC Stadium. You are right, it is indeed owned by Hull City Council, but some of the funding came from sale of the Council's share of the telephone system to Kingston Communications who also agreed to be the sponsors of the Stadium.
