The Week Off, Did Nobby Make A Mistake?

Post by cpwigan »

In the NRL, clubs regularly get a week off re a bye. In a recent discussion Phil Gould said he always saw the week off as an opportunity/a real bonus to work on the game plan/key tactics/plays. He said giving the players a rest made them 'soft'

Did Nobby make a mistake. As it currently stands this present teams seems to only respond to having their faces rubbed in the dirt by an embrassing defeat, Nobby then bagging/flogging them the week after. As soon as they win, they start sitting on their behinds and believing they have a God given right to win.

week off my eye, they should have been in training doing the hard hours! we don't pay their wages so they can have a week off in sunny wherever

if they do go a hot place, they should take them high up a mountain and do stamina and fitness training, because up there there is less oxygen and pressure.

Yep a big mistake, I said it would be when he said they would have the week off.

If the players had a week off fitness training and GYM work as well then thats twice as bad.

Spot on adrenalinxx. In fact, I'm going to ask another question now.

To those who went, was there any of them that looked a little tubby?

I'll bet Ashton did, and that's just a plain guess.

Ashton's died his hair AGAIN????????? He had blond streaks in before he went away?!?!?!?!

It looks like they HAVE had the COMPLETE week off without ANY gym/fitness work as someone has all ready suggested (spelling?).

Some of the players really looked unfit for that match, if Noble did let the players have a complete rest for the whole week then he really needs to do some homework because letting players have a whole week off is one of the worst things that he could have done mid season.

All the players in the Wigan squad have a higher than normal level of fitness but the human body always tries to return to an 'average' level of fitness hence why they have to train everyday. If they did have a week off then during that week there bodies would have been returning to a 'average' level of fitness so when they return to training would be unfit to play a game of rugby.

The body returns to 'average' level of fitness very quickly, the effects of four weeks worth of training can be lost in one week if training is stopped.

Without benefit of hindsight, this thread from 2 weeks ago sums up our thoughts:

From that thread:

I said:
I'm concerned that we seem to be building some momentum now , and might lose some of that with the week off.

DaveO said:"We could go back to being half asleep the way we have been playing this season. We need to get to some back to back league wins and the players taking their eye off the ball due to the break is a real danger IMO."

Some of us could see it coming; why couldn't Nobby?
