Standard Of Refereeing!!!

Post by turf »

Just wondering now that the season is well into the second part, what you guy's think of the refereeing standards compared to earlier on in the year.

I think they have improved massively compared to the start of the season. I am on about general refereeing standards here by the way, not just the referees at Wigan games.

I have all ready drawn up a list of four out of the six FT referees in the running for the referee of the year award this year, and here are my nominations:

Ben Thaler
Richard Silverwood
Ian Smith
Phil Bentham

I have deliberately left Ganson and Klein out becaue I think that after the cardiff fiascoe, that neither of these two will even bee in the nominations for the award this year.

Yes, and that A to B.

Klein seems to have bookjed his ideas up, he had a fine game tonight with Quins and Catalan.

Or was he sad that the VR wasn't Ganson!!!!!!!

PS: I think Thaler is the best of the lot.

Thaler - Good referee rarely makes a huge mistake

Bentham - One that is improving

Smith - Not got anything bad to say about him really

Silverwood - Can be a bit iffy at times

Fair assessment the big i. I would put Bentham as "improved a lot", or "had some fine games recently" something like that.

Silverwood I would probably agree with, although he to has had some fine games since his horror show with us and Leeds when we went to their place and won 18 - 20.

Remember - He penalised CA for so called moving off after he was tackled, when his arm wasn't even touching the floor, and then he binned Fielden for so called holding on to a Leeds players arm when it was vice versa.

Silverwood can be very clever sometimes with the way he awards penalties. It seems that if the penalty count is against one side and if they are losing by quite a way he awards them a load of penalties just to even it out so it doesnt suggest in the match reports that he has shown bias towards either team.

I wasnt going to give any assesment on klown or ganson becasue they have been mentioned on numerous occasions by people on this board!

That is very clever refereeing from Silverwood.

He had a superb game last night with Saints/Leeds I thought. You hardly noticed hi, in fact you didn't apart from when he blew his whistle.

That is good to see I think.

It does signal that referee has had a good game if he isnt noticed that much. Anyway silverwood must have had a good game because saints lost! :D

Should be a big and inteersting test for Thaler tomorrow.

He is refereeing Hull KR v Hull FC.

Probably THE biggest match in his young professional career to date.

Tell me something. Someone told me that before he became FT, and when he was refereeing in NL1, Thaler used to be dreadful (i.e, Ganson/Klein standard).

Is that true?

Probably was but dont forget he is the youngest referee in the league (I think). It was probably just a question of confidence with Thaler and now he is more confident he is a better referee!
