Best way to overcome salary cap and lack of consistancy

Post by nathan_rugby »

Is to just get rid of the majority of our players who arnt home grown. Havign a team full of youths who know what it means to play for there own club. A team who are playing to earn money and possibley get rises.
That would stop us getting done on the salary cap and would stop having players who are not playing with there heart on there sleeve.

A team with the likes of.

Gareth Hock, Sean Lockers, Paul Prescot, Harrison Hansen, Darrell Goulding, Joel Tomkins, Liam Colbon, Michael McIlorum, Eamon O'Carroll,Thomas Coyle

Half of them have already played in the first team and impressed. This would definatly put wigan back on the radar and have them as a striking force again.
We would be using our youth system and be developing players just like saints have with wilkin and roby etc.

Absolutely. Lets get more of our Academy products playing, and bring back the days of Offiah, Connolly, Robinson, Bell, Tuigamala, Botica, Platt, Skerrett, Hanley, Cowie, Miles...all the local lads that had pride in their shirts!

Don't you think they'd be a bit too old now?

Nope, I think they'd still do better than the shower we've got now.

I might also have commented on how much stick Lockers & Hock got after yesterday, to make my point about the myth of local lads having more pride.

:D Excellent point. 'Pride in the shirt' doesn't always mean being from the home town. In the glory days, the pride came from the honour of managing to get a place in the world's finest club team. You sort of reach a critical mass where everyone is so good that nobody wants to be the one who lets the side down. The 'shirt' is about a lot more than the town of Wigan. If you ask me, the rot started with Paul Atcheson - the first player of that era that never looked like he was bothered.

In the franchise you can do that because you can build without religation being over your shoulder. Would you accept a few years with these boys coming through and trying rather than a load of aussies here for the money>. Would you accept being further down the ladder with tryers than be nearer the top but frustrated by slackers HC

Some poeple are so fickle! You were posting the other week about how great Lockers was for making 52 tacles (brilliant thing to do) and because of an average game in a Semi Final he doesn't have pride in the shirt? If think you've lost grip, pal!
Nope, read what I said.
I haven't singled anyone out for criticism in any of my posts since yesterday's game, although others on here have; IMO it was a team failing.

The point I'm making is that the likes of Hock, Lockers, Hansen don't show any more passion than the ones who aren't Academy products. This whole "home-town" thing is a myth; our best ever sides had very few local lads in them.

The thing is, when you buy high profile players, a lot of them are playign for the money and not for the club.

That is what i mean by using youngsters who play for the team etc and play to earn money.

And if any of the youngsters were offered more money at another club (or even another sport, mentioning no names!), they'd jump at it.
