Got something to discuss about RL in general? Then this is the place to post it.

Is it right that no-one really knows whats happening regarding whether Super League teams will be franchises as in the NRL next year (doing away with relegation/promotion). If so how do teams like Salford know whether they can get back into SL or not.

Franhcise applications open next March. Any team can apply, whether already in SL or not, and there's no guarantee that being in SL will automatically mean getting one of the franchise places.

The RFL will be looking at things like ground facilities, youth development, marketing, fan base and financial status before decing who gets in. They may well be looking at geographical locations too, with regard to expansion.

As far as I'm aware, they haven't even announced how many places will be allocated - some suggestions of increasing to 14 teams.

Playing ability, quite rightly, will be a secondary consideration, as this changes in the short term, whereas the above factors are more long term.

Depending how loosely they interpret their criteria, there look like being about 8 teams guaranteed a place: Wigan, Leeds, Bradford, Warrington, Hull, Harlequins, Catalans and Huddersfield.

I suspect Saints will also get in, despite "$41t ground, no fans", and probably Salford (on the basis of their new ground), Widnes & maybe Castleford. I strongly suspect the RFL want Celtic Crusaders in there, and possibly either Wakey or HKR as well, which would make 14.

Wasn't there talk a while back of a Cumbrian franchise too?

So what now for National League sides. If no-one is coming down there can't be any chance for NL clubs to join Super League?

If another club, whether from NL1 or anywhere, put together a realistic package, they could be admitted too - either by getting rid of an existing club that fails to maintain their status, or by expanding the league. It's already happened in Australia, where a similar system is in place - Gold Coast being the most recent addition..

I can't see how a Cumbrian franchise could be justified, though, given the lack of fans & facilities up there.

feel a bit sad really, they have a fantastic youth development and sorry Hull KR won't come and take kids on from clubs in the NW of england. IMO a big loss to the future of the british sport... Maybe they will keep the development but it is usally the first expence to go...
