player turnover
player turnover
Just been surfing the site and came across the teams from the stains game in March 05 (we won).
We only have TWO players still with us from that game,Hansen and O'loughlin.
They have TEN.
Maybe there is a clue as to why we are not consistant enough.

Re: player turnover
im more worried about leeds for the future rather than sts ,as they have a very young and up coming squad

Due to cap restriction they will not see them all with the club for a long time. Wage demands will dictate who stays who goes.
Re: player turnover
There is a lot of mythology about stability of coaches / players often spoke by the people who will benefit from such stability.
Player stability in the key positions is the KEY to successful RL teams. The key positions in the modern game being 7,9, 1 and to a slightly lesser degree 6. If you look at Saints; Long, KC, Wellens and Pryce. Leeds; Burrow, Diskin, Webb and McGuire. Your team is built around those key organisers. Think back to Wigan; Hampson, Dermott, Gregory, Edwards. Even in later days Radlinski, Newton, Lam, ANOTHER Aussie. Cats even have stability there too Greenshields, McGuire, Bosch etc.
Player turnover should be planned and systematic. Eastmond will replace Long. Look how Eastmond is given game time at centre, at fullback to acclimatise, to watch and learn.
Coaches can and should change on a 3 year cycle. Lowe/Monie both did. Anderson is going to. If you get a bad coach GET RID, like a rotten apple they will turn every apply in the barrel bad.

Re: player turnover
Yes i would agree with player stability being the key factor in any teams make up even in our prime we had different coaches.
Most of the present team are signed up for a long term after taking out the short term signings.
Saints and Leeds are no super teams they just do the basics right ,any coach could take over from Saints and keep them winning as Daniel Anderson said after Wembley they coach themselves and have a winning mentality all play together.
We seem to be an unfit side with no idea how to defend/play rugby we have most of the same players here next year and the same coach if we do not progress next year then the coach must go he will have had 3 and a half seasons.IMO we are worse than last year and have gone backwards .

Wigans team from this game:mike binder wrote:we was a ageing team ,come back in 3 years time when they have been THREW A RE BUILD SYSTEM
Wigan: Radlinski, Dallas, Wild, Vaealiki, Aspinwall, Brown, Orr, Seuseu, Newton, Guisset, Tickle, Hansen, O'Loughlin.
Replacements: Godwin, Sculthorpe, Allen, Beswick
That is not an ageing team.
Re: player turnover
That was probably the problem, Wild, Aspinwall, Brown, Hansen, O'Loughlin, Allen and Beswick were all to young to be trying to base a team around.shevington wrote:Wigans team from this game:mike binder wrote:we was a ageing team ,come back in 3 years time when they have been THREW A RE BUILD SYSTEM

Apart from Radlinski that squad lacks key players, Orr wasn't playing that well and SeuSeu was constantly injured. Most of those young players had there Wigan careers ruined because they were given too much too young.
I think Wigan have at least learned from that mistake, they are giving player like Tomkins and Goulding more time to develop in the squad rather than expect them to be super league standard in a week.

Re: player turnover
i agree with whats being said i think your pivot positions are so important and wigan have failed to keep any consistancy in that area. Really we have never recovered from the loss of rads at full back. that for a start is bad enough. It is a key position and without a world class full back you cant expect to do anything really. Webb and Wellens are both excellent in their respective areas wellen (defence) Webb (attack) but one of the things that sets them apart is they are also more than competent at other areas aswell.
Again with half back, we still i dont feel have a working half back pairing. You look at stains and leeds and they are a pairing they work for each other for instance stains, pyrce uses his strength and step to free long up to place the perfect kick or pass. We have 2 indiviual half backs and have got by so far off little pieces of brilliance from both. Lulu i feel plays 100% better when Barrett isn't on the pitch he gets involved more and he just seems to raise his game. But you need a solid partnership, orr and dobbo complemented eachother and thats what you need from your half backs.
Hooker, we do not seem to have a good ball handling hooker ala newton which i hope piggy will provide. Higham is an impact hooker and a good one at that but isn't a ditrbuter. Same could be said for macca who throws way to many forward passes for my liking.
I mentioned a while back how i felt Wigan the club died a few years ago, it used to have characters in the squad and you would knew the players, i feel like that has very much been lost and 17 individuals take to the feild each week the "team" doesn't seem to be there but with the revolving door on the changing rooms that is not gonna rectify itself quickly.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure
