Player chances with the new regime
Would anyone think that MM would take a liking to include Hock in the squad when his time is up or would he rather have the #11 shirt already in place? I would hope the decision lies with IL as in this way, the chairman buys the player, the coach trains them. Hope it isnt the other way round in this case.
Another is Shaun Ainscough, will we see him more in 2010 even though we can't really drop Richards and Roberts has 3 more years. With Phelps playing well (unless we buy Slater which is doubtful) and seemingly going to get the #1 jersey Shaun might be a third choice winger... we shall see but I hope shaun regularly starts with an improved contract or he'll go elsewhere there's no doubt.

I disagree with your ist para.imo it's the coaches job to identify the player he wants' and IL's job to say yes or no for reasons of finance or cap constraints.
I believe every player starts with a clean slate, its their job to prove to the coach their willingness to perform and get fit.I expect MM to be quite ruthless in this regard.I hope MM selects on form not on status.

I would hope that by the time Hock is ready to return that the team will be so good that he would really have to fight for a place. No player should ever feel that his place is secure and should train/play so well that they earn there place every week.

That was something I have been wondering. I thought someone posted on here that Shaun was going to Salford on loan next season. Is this still correct or have decisions like that been put on hold untill MM arrives?ancientnloyal wrote: Another is Shaun Ainscough, will we see him more in 2010 even though we can't really drop Richards and Roberts has 3 more years. I am not one of those who dislikes Brearley for the sake of it, but I don't think his defensive skills are all that much better than Shaun's.
Its just my personal view but I think Shaun is far more exciting in attack and if he can pull off a hat trick every week, I would allow him some latitude whilst the coaches help him work on his defence!
Lets face it, Martin Offiah wasn't the greatest defensive winger but we 'put up with him'!!

I think MM will have plenty of time to assess the attitude and ability of Gareth Hock before deciding to include him in the Wigan squad, when his ban is complete.ancientnloyal wrote:Would anyone think that MM would take a liking to include Hock in the squad when his time is up or would he rather have the #11 shirt already in place? I am sure Gaz's attitude will have to change before MM makes that decision.
IMO Shaun Ainscough is a great talent too, and should be given the opportunity prove himself worthy to have a Wigan first team shirt on his back next season.
Competition for places in the right environment is a good thing.

Re: Player chances with the new regime
I remember reading an article with Brian Carney where he described Nobbys selection policy at GB as based on loyalty to players and with that loyalty came the expectation to perform. I can see the logic to that because it would create an environment of trust. Perhaps at GB level, the players are good enough to work in that way, but at our club level, consistent selection of underperforming players based on loyalty with better opportunity waiting in the wings didn't work.
If I was the incoming coach I would wipe the slate clean for all the players and not make a decision proper on squad numbers / positions until after christmas (unlikely though for marketing reasons). The reality is that most of the players would end up where they are now, but jostling for the wing / prop / 2nd row spots can only be a good thing. We all saw how the selection of Tomkins and Ainscough shamed the team into performance.

Re: Player chances with the new regime
I was thinking that in some cases there could be two ways of aquiring players, as seen in many sports. The board buys a player (think ronaldo, kaka, benzema...) and the coach trains them and finds a way to play with them. Or the other would be from the coach who wants a certain player.
For Hock, would it be that IL has the deciding factor for his inclusion (hence MM fitting him in) or would MM rather have his own signing for that position in 2010/11 instead of waiting for a place to be filled... that is to say if Hock is in anyone's plans?

The only thing that concerns me with regard to Gaz is that if we do not take up the option to give him another chance other clubs would dive in to sign him up.And no matter what we feel about him and the drug situation he is a talented player.A player that I would certainly prefer playing in our team than against us.But on the issue of is it up to IL or MM I would think that the coach would want the option to either include him or exclude him.I do not think that MM would appreciate IL interfering with his selection.Because that in my opinion would just tell me that IL had to much influence in the selection of players. And that would surely undermine MM as head coach.

Forget about the way the warriors have been playing under Nobby and give the whole squad a clean slate. MM will be watching and studying every game we've played over the last season and will be identifying every single players weakness and how he can improve them and make them into a winning team. One thing he will bring is a link between himeself and the overseas players we have, unlike Nobby who never seemed to have a bond with these players. When you look at the winning Rhinos team, the one thing they have above any other team is Superleague is team spirit and confidence in the plyers around them. If Fielden stays i can see a big season coming up for him. With certain players it becomes a confidence thing and from being the best prop in the world to how he is now, it has to be confidence thats holding him back. It may be the same with many of our squad, players dont just go crap over night for nothing. Look at Matt King at Warrington, you dont have a dozen Kangaroo caps under your belt if you dont have some class. Amos Robberts is another player that without doubt had some class when he played in the NRL, maybe its a confidence thing with him to?.
