Radlinski Appointed Rugby General Manager

Post by josie andrews »

Wigan Rugby League Club is delighted to announce that Kris Radlinski has been appointed as Rugby General Manager reporting directly to Head Coach, Michael Maguire.

Kris will operate as right-hand man to Michael Maguire providing the vital link between the Performance Department and other functions of the Club. This new role has been created to allow Michael and his frontline team of coaches and conditioning staff to concentrate on player coaching, performance, discipline and standards with Kris ensuring that these are implemented uniformly across the Club from First Team to Scholarship. Kris will also be involved in a variety of direct activities with the First Team operation and will continue his fine work with the Club’s Scholarship operation.

Speaking about the new role, Chairman Ian Lenagan said:

“This is an important role within the organisation and an area identified as needing improvement to ensure that today's new standards, disciplines and levels of performance, skills and behaviour required from a Wigan player are the same from Scholarship to First Team. Kris has quickly shown his qualities already in Scholarship Management and in his special role with the England Team and is a perfect candidate. He will liaise between Michael and all other aspects of the Club to enhance the smooth running of the Performance Department.”

Head Coach, Michael Maguire, added:

“We are pleased to appoint ‘Rads’ to this position. One of my first briefs was to take a look at the Club as a whole and to look at areas for improvement and development. Kris suits the role, has the respect of everyone at the Club and I am delighted to be working closely with him.”

Kris Radlinski said,

“I am honoured to be given such an important and prestigious position within the Club and look forward to the challenge. I enjoy my work with the Scholarship players and am delighted I will be able to combine the two roles, in particular using my experience to ensure the players understand what it means to play for Wigan whilst also looking after their welfare.”

Praise where praise is due Mr Lenegan, well done on this appointment :)
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

It seems a good appointment for the club. Keeping quality experience in house can only be a benefit.

Can anybody clarify for me though, why Kris has had such a sea change in his views on being involved in rugby and coaching. When he retired he was absolutely adamant and went on record that he didn't want to be a coach and didn't want to be involved in making coaching descisions.

Why then the change? Was he just glad to be away from the Millward regime? Or is he just better balanced to get into coaching with some time away from actually playing?

He needed the job?

Having read his book I have no idea why he ever came out with that as it's clear he has a passion for the club instilled in him by the environment he grew up in and learned the professional game under.

I never pegged him as a senior coach myself. Too nice a bloke. But I think he will be ideally suited to this role which doesn't have him making any 1st team coaching or decisions. It's a bit like the Joe Lydon role as he is responsible for making sure all the different teams are pulling in the same direction.

What can also be noted from reading his book, are his comments that his life felt empty and he felt really depressed when he retired, having been part of the club and the game for so long, and then it was all over, in the playing sense anyway.

I suspect that, at the time of writing, he honestly didn't have any inclination to start coaching and that he may have wanted to find something else to do with himself for the next step in his career.

Whatever his reasons for his change of heart, I'm glad he's back at the club and I'm glad that he's still as passionate as ever about advocating what it means to be part of the biggest club name in World RL.
