Is it time to cancel Deacon's playing contract?

Post by ancientnloyal »

Would it be a good idea to cancel Paul Deacon's playing contract now? I'm no DaveO when it comes to the 'cap but would this free up money to put towards a new player or does Deacon's full wage count even if cancelled?

I understand there is some money in the kitty and a bit extra could bring in a half decent forward until the end of the season with a better contract for 2011.

I doubt Deacon would want to stop playing but he can concentrate more on this coaching lark

If Wigan cancelled his contract it would defiantly count on the cap because Wigan would still have to pay up for the remainder of his contract.

However if Deacon and Wigan cancelled the contract by mutual consent say if Deacon retired for rugby league then it might free up some salary cap.

Not 100% on the rules regarding players retiring but it seems a bit harsh to continue to count a retired player on the cap.

Medlocke is correct (bookmark this post - it doesn't happen often!).

No matter what happens with Deacs for the remainder of the season, his full salary will count against the cap.

Could they not just cancel his contract, move him on to coaching, then give him a big bonus at the end of the year for his "coaching efforts"?

If we cancel Deacon's contract after 6 months his salary value for the remaining 6 months is removed from his contract. However any payments regarding the termination of a contract will be counted on the salary cap for the remainder of the salary cap year.

So if we cancel Deacon's contract after 6 months (say £40k has been taken off the cap), we'd basically be able to sign a player who earns £20k in the remaining 6 month period as it would take the yearly salary value of the player up to £40k.

So if Deacon's contract is cancelled (by mutual concent) then the rest of his contract isn't counted on the cap.
That would only apply if we cancelled his whole contract, not just the playing side - ie if we sacked him.

As long as he's employed by the club his whole salary counts against the cap (as he's already played this season).

Just a pity Joe Mellor has been injured. We are very thin on halfbacks and may need Deacon. He would be ideal v Wakey for example if Sam needs to rest.

I don`t see the point in canceling his contract , his wage is already covered by the salary cap and would have to honoured , that`s what contracts are all about .

We may also need him come the end of the season if anything happens to Tommy or Sam .

Agreed. I have to say though that I havent been impressed with him though since he came and he is very weak in defence.
