Discipline and control

Post by cpwigan »

I calmed down enough to give the Leeds game some thought and the observation by Clarke worried me re how well we start games but progressively get worse. It worried me because it is not a fitness issue anymore.

So I watched the Leeds game again and what struck me is our discipline is a big issue. leeds received 3 successive penalties and got back into the game. Early in the season the penalties were for our fantastic defence and the whisper / shouting media campaign. Such penalties right or wrong yiou can live with but increasingly the penalties have been down to ill discipline and petulant antics like Joel kicking out.

Likewise. If you watch an NRL game, teams / players relinquish possession far less readily and we seem to get a lead and lose respect for possession. Game management is a huge issue in Britain / SL. We lag far behind the Aussies in this respect and seem unable to accept or know how to control the tempo of a game how to maintaion pressure.

The ill discipline and lack of conytrol means that when we need amagic play like a Sam chip and chase we are battling to regain control get back into games and playing low risk so high risk strategies are not used at the back end of games when it might be time to use them.

The discipline issue we can control easily though

This is the first time I have been on the board since the match on Sunday and the first Subject I have looked at, so I am sorry if it has been covered, I thought at the match how two stupid Joel Tompkins fouls resulted in scores and spoiled good team effort/loss of ground, the man must realise it is a team game, and not to put the team at a disadvantage through petulance/hot headedness.
There was a lot of controlled aggression out on that pitch and his lack of it nulified the good start his brother gave the team

Do you possibly think being in the leadership group has made him worse Mick?

Spot on. There have been several games this season where the entire play took place in the opposition's half. Then, penalty and try conceded!

Maybe the players just try too hard to please their home fans?

Either way it needs sorting because we certainly aren't being beaten on talent or fitness!

Penalties due to the hysteria from our new defence I can handle but the penalties in recent games have been stupidity personified.

Possibly cp but it is about time he looked at the bigger picture, ie. to look at the scoreboard every now and then to see, 1, if we are winning, to keep it clean and sledge if need, or, 2, take his aggression out by playing at the top of his game for his team mates.
Rant nearly over :(

Since we started losing a few, the furore over our defence seems to have died down!

As much as i like joel ,And he is a great player he does give too many penalties maybe just maybe a ban would of been the better decision for us as a team , So if we win on fri night he might think a bit more before he goes into the next game ,should he be dropped ? now that would shock him, I know we must play our strongest team , And to be honest madge should of maybe dropped him earlier in the season before it got to the nitty gritty part , might of woke him up a bit .

The referee's need to be taken to question too. I agree disipline has dropped, but the referees are so inconsistant, calling nothing the lads are giving and getting more off/to the opposition. This leads to frustration and we are getting suckered in and losing the plot.

I am sure MM has looked at it and brought the subjust to the fore, but if not MAGDE sort it out mate!!

I forget which game it was be recently we put in a performance with very few errors or penalties given away and we looked a class apart.

It's also true that many times teams only score against us off the back of penalties. All Leeds first half points came that way.

Put these two things together and it's blindingly obvious the coaching staff need to focus on discipline.

Some of the penalties we give away are stupid and sometimes on the 5th tackle as well. Things like a foot in at the PTB or other attempt at being a bit sly. Both Joel and Lockers have given plenty of these penalties away this season and they should know better.
