Norman Cherrington RIP

An immensely powerful build but super fast for a forward. IIRC he played on the wing in a Championship Final. Always remember seeing Norman as we entered Central Park to stand on the Spion Kop. Even in his latter years he looked like a fine athlete albeit sporting fine cauliflower ears.

I think Wigan / Micron should be working together to get as much interviewed footage with the stars of decades ago.

That's sad. I knew him when he had the Pear Tree. Think he had a couple of others as well.

Really nice chap. And like CP says, definitely had a rugby players ears! Bet there's not many left from that photo!

He wore contact lenses you know, and I remember one game where he lost one or both and the best part of the Wigan team were grovelling about looking for them in front of the new stand. Happy days.

Sure to be missed by our rugby family , I saw him play dozens of times , a good uncompromising forward who played at a time when you had to be hard .

Showing my age here because I well remember Norman.Hard uncompromising player never took a backward step.Playing at a time when rugby was bloody hard.It's people like Norman that kept my desire to watch more and more rugby alive.RIP.

My lasting memory of Norman relates to his 'sending-off' at Knowsley Road after knocking seven shades of poo out of Vinty Karalius. After receiving his 'marching orders', he had to walk virtually the whole length of the pitch. This he did very slowly amid the outraged howls of the locals whilst waving to the crowd in acknowledgement.

I once recalled this occasion to him in the Pear Tree and he was delighted that I remembered it.

Sadly, he was one of the very last remaining members of that great side.

Never knew he'd floored Karalius. Bet there weren't many who could put that on their CV!
