Team of All-Time: HOOKER nominations (get 'em in!)

Post by ancientnloyal »

Right, Fullback has been sorted democratically. Kris Radlinski beat off the Legend that is Jim Sullivan and Steve Hampson and has been voted by us forum users in Wigan's Team of All Time in my take on celebrating our 140th year in business.

The next shirt up for grabs will be the #9 HOOKER... Can we get names of people you'd like to be put up for vote and I'll do my best to argue their case (in a paragraph) in a vote starting in April.

======================
I will put Joe Egan's name into the hat, for obvious reasons.

This needs a bit of work but it's a start:

And the “kind of rugby player you’d want to be in your dreams” James Leytham

This is a tough un to call because the requirements have changed so much. Could you compare the role Micky mac plays to what was required of Joe Egan or Colin Clarke?

Any road, my choice would be Joe Egan. Hall of fame inductee, outstanding for the indomitables touring Australia and eventually coached Wigan to championship success and 3 challenge cup finals.

I can only base my vote on players that I've actually seen play. Whilst I've been watching since 1986, I can't remember seeing many hookers with all the attributes that Terry Newton had. Martin Dermott, Martin Hall etc all had excellent qualities as well, but I just think that Newton had a more rounded game than many of his predecessors.

His running from dummy half was excellent, as was his backing up. His passing from the play the ball was spot on and his defence was ferocious (sometimes a little too much).
He played with a passion and pride in the cherry and white shirt and never took a backwards step when he played for us.
One of the biggest mistakes the club made was selling him to Bradford, in the Mickey Higham fiasco.

Therefore my vote goes to the late Terry Newton.

agree with Jobo - Joe Egan for me he could be stylish and hand a great pair of hands ( my Mrs will kill me as Colin Clarke until Ellery came along was always her favourite player )

Wigan is and always will be a town of Cherry & White

Joe Egan. Can't really include modern day hookers as no actual "hooking" ability is required.
Egan had the attributes of the modern day hookers, but also the specialised job of winning his team some possession from the scrums.

Much as i'd like to nominate Tez Newton and Nicky Kiss my vote would be Martin Dermot Derm could put a bullet pass either way and not many rugby players can pass both ways equally

One great Australian hooker we had in the 90's was Robbie McCormack, pity we only saw one season due to injury but he was a great player. Michael Monaghan at Warrington reminds me of Robbie.

Martin Dermott was the best passer of a ball from the acting half back position that I have seen and is probably my favourite hooker (not seen any from before him though)

my choice would be between Tez Newton, Martin Dermott or Colin Clarke, seeing Clarky hasn't got a nomination yet, that's who I'll go for
