Do away with Magic Weekend

Post by ian.birchall »

Can anyone tell me why the RFL are persisting with the 27th game over the 'Magic' weekend.
Now that we have officially given up on the idea of expanding the game by getting the natives in Edinburgh and/or Cardiff interested this is just another away game for the regular season ticket holders who keep all 14 clubs going year in year out.
I never believed the hype about record crowds for the weekend. If you took the regular attendances at Wigan v Stains, Leeds v Bradford and the Hull derby the attendances in those games added together would exceed the attendances on the two days of 'Magic'
Any argumants out there?

It gives the fans an optional day out in the absence of any other mid-season events.

True, but in doing so, it dilutes still further, the value of the league because of the amount of times that teams have to play each other.

At least the RFL have finally seen sense and mixed the fixtures up a bit, so that we don't play Saints 73 times a season

The RFL don't have any sense, it is obviously a genuine mistake by the fixture compiler (Eamon McManus).

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

It gives the sport some exposure. Sky advertise the event on their channels, it gets brought up more during the days on their sports news channel and is on live for pretty much an entire weekend so it might get more people thinking to give the game a chance if they are sat at home waiting for the football to come on TV or something.

I think you're only looking at it from the persepctive of a RL fan, not as someone trying to market the fan to a larger audience. Maybe we thing taking it physically to that audience hasn't worked out, but the potential TV audience is still greater than the potential people who could come see the games live that are local to Edinburgh and Cardiff.

I think there are other ways we could do it that isn't the same format - make it the four CC quarter finals is a decent suggestion i've heard. Or make some sort of representative fixture list to play and give clubs a week off.

said it before and i'll say it again, turn it into a sevens tournament with all the teams from SL & Co-op league all drawn out of a hat, knock out all the way, big cash prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd, try and get it sponsored by a big company and bombard sky sports with ads

Superb idea. Sadly, Sky and the RFL haven't got the nouse to pull it off. I think it would be amazing and would be a real crowd puller.
