Bench selection

Post by neilbass »

Massive game & can't knock the 16 lads who played - gave it everything. Just one question mark over Wane's bench selection tonight - why have Williams on the bench for what was always going to be a bruising encounter and not use him?

Surely better to go with an extra forward to relieve the pressure and give us fresh legs. Was a close game and it could have made all the difference?

I'm still positive after that performance though - we lost it first half with too many errors and penalties. Drew the 2nd half but that 10 point margin proved too much

It is a bit odd and it has happened before but in this case which forward would you have had on the bench?

Lauaki was injured. Not sure why Taylor didn't play unless rested for Friday a few short days away.

We certainly need some players back. 6, 9 and 13 out plus others who would normally play is getting very tiresome.

Maybe could of tried Gelling in the second row for parts and utilised a young 3/4 player on the bench? Although Gelling did have an awesome game at centre in my opinion

True DaveO we're running out of numbers aren't we? Even spelling Logan straight swap for Williams would have given us a fresh burst though?

How does Greenwood look - he's been in the 19 a couple of times now but not made his debut has he?

Or even Andy Powell for a 15 minute baptism of fire into RL would have been better than wasting the option?

Best I've seen Gelling tonight - caused them real problems.
Also Josh deserves a big shout for his defence tonight - how many high balls did he sweep up?

I do not see anything wrong with a back on the bench provided we use whomever we select. It made sense as we actually had the possession we needed but perhaps lacked the creativity/individual spark to get the scores.

Superb effort though just lacking some sparkles of magic

Undoubtedly. I personally would have loved to have seen Hampshire in the 17 and injected into the game for short periods. Our team is icredibly honest and hard working to the point of sweating blood BUT the sparkle is sometimes needed. Still, fans have to be pleased by what our team did tonight.

To be honest I couldn't believe we were only 10 nil down at half time with the way the game was going..the tackles were brutal at times.. I could feel them myself.Just a couple of things let us down but they can easily be fixed.
I would love to see a few footballers have a go at this game.

Although it is disappointing to lose, no one can fault the effort, and have you noticed that when other teams have players out through injury,Pinky and Perky never let it drop...I don't think I heard them mention it once tonight..

Once we get a few more players back we will be ok

Hasn't Powell (not our Welsh prop!) played 9 before? Maybe Williams in at 6 would have offered something different with Powell at 9.

Taylor is also injured, thats why he didn't make the 17.

I think the idea would have been to put Williams on and move Powell to 9 for Logan (who was very good) to have a break if needed and also provide cover if Smith, who was a doubt having been out last week, aggrevated his shoulder. He probably planned to use Williams at somepoint but Powell and Logan didn't need to come off.
