Re: 2014 Squad numbers confrimed
2013 Super League and Challenge Cup winners Wigan Warriors announce their 2014 Squad Numbers with 23 of the 38 named coming through the Club's highly-acclaimed Youth Development System. In addition, a number of young Wigan-Trained players have moved up the squad list following the departure of Sam Tomkins, Pat Richards, Lee Mossop and Chris Tuson.
New Full Back signing Matty Bowen has been given squad number 1 as a direct replacement for Sam Tomkins while other new editions Eddy Pettybourne, Dan Sarginson, Tony Clubb and John Batemen will wear numbers 22, 23, 24 and 25 respectively. The Warriors other new recruit for 2014, Sam Hopkins, has been given squad number 29.
Elsewhere Anthony Gelling has been given squad number 5 while Scott Taylor, Ben Flower, Logan Tomkins, Gil Dudson and Dom Crosby have been rewarded for their performances last year by moving up the list. Wigan Warriors have also given First Team squad numbers to youngsters Connor Farrell, Ryan Sutton and Ben Austin after the trio all impressed in the Under 19's successful season.
Wigan Warriors loyal fans will retain squad number 18 in recognition of the role they play supporting the team.
Speaking about the 2014 Squad List, Head Coach Shaun Wane said,
"Squad numbers are always eagerly anticipated by the fans. I always base them on performance from the previous season together with the potential the Coaching Staff see in individuals for the year ahead. Squad numbers do not guarantee places in the side and all the players know they will have to continue to work hard both in pre-season and throughout the year to make the team. I am excited about the season ahead and think we have an excellent squad to build on our successes of 2013."

Why did it need two posts?
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Gelling number 5 does this mean he is seen as a winger again?
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure
Re: 2014 Squad numbers confrimed
anyone else concerned about Gelling at 5?

Initially, yes. Then I thought it could be an absolute masterstroke. There are 2 excellent wingers lurking at 31 and 33 to keep him on his toes. After all the difficulties he has faced I think he deserves his chance but this could be a career defining season for him.si_bax wrote:anyone else concerned about Gelling at 5?
Re: 2014 Squad numbers confrimed
I think there is a tendency here to reward the players who contributed last season - from that I suppose Gelling at 5 just means he is the most senior player that is competing for the position who contributed last year. Simliar to Hughes getting 4 last season maybe...
I don't think anything should be read into it too much.
The H getting 11 and Powell getting a number are the more curious ones, although maybe it just indicates that the coaching staff maybe don't want H to go even if the club feel it may be a worthwhile move financially.

H&P still Wigan players hence the numbers. May change though.
