No idea why he hasn't named an extended bench like the other coaches all have. If Smith is a doubt then you would have Ratchford on an extended bench surely. Plus Lockers who may still play apparently.

I'm surprised Westerman has been picked again, there are other ways we could have gone if Lockers doesn't make it, he was ineffective last week. Joel or Graham at loose and bringing the unlucky not to be selected Whitehead into the squad over Ferres should have happened too.

Door ajar for England rugby league skipper

The door remains ajar for Sean O'Loughlin's return despite the inspirational England captain being a glaring omission for the match that could knock Australia out of the Four Nations rugby league tournament.

For the second consecutive week, a recovering O'Loughlin (quad) was not included as coach Steve McNamara remained faithful to the 17 that held out Samoa 32-26 in last weekend's Four Nations opener.

However, the English mentor conceded there could be "a change or two" ahead of Sunday's crunch clash with their arch-rivals in Melbourne.

If England notches their first win over Australia since 1995, the Kangaroos will miss out on the Four Nations final for the first time.

"Even though we have named the same side, there could be a change or two at the back end of the week," McNamara said at their Gold Coast training camp.

"Those that were unable to train are making decent progress.

"Sean O'Loughlin is definitely improving and we will continue to monitor him throughout this week.

"It is really difficult to name a team earlier in the week.

"Firmer decisions will be made towards the weekend, when we arrive in Melbourne."

Bulldogs prop James Graham maintained the captaincy reins with the jury still out on O'Loughlin.

Joe Westerman impressed on debut at lock with O'Loughlin sidelined for last weekend's win over Samoa in Brisbane.

But England centre Kallum Watkins admitted O'Loughlin's presence would provide a spring in their step as they looked to shut out Australia.

O'Loughlin is the only member of the 24-man squad to have tasted success against Australia - with Great Britain at the 2004 and 2006 Tri Nations.

"His influence is massive. Physically he is a big lad too and leads from the front so we missed him that way," Watkins said on Tuesday.

O'Loughlin was rated at "80-90 per cent" fitness and had begun training with the England squad in a sign he had finally overcome the quad strain picked up playing for Wigan in this month's Super League grand final loss to St Helens.

Other injury concerns - rookie halfback Matty Smith (foot) and reserve hooker Daryl Clark (back) - were retained in the 17 after the gutsy win over Samoa.

"It was a hard-fought win for us against Samoa (But) there is room for improvement within our game," McNamara said.

"We had to overcome a very talented and tenacious team with limited preparation in extreme heat.

"I was pleased with the way we dug in and found a way to win in extreme circumstances.

"We will have to show that same resolve this week."

Whilst it is easy to be critical sitting on this side of the world and just having to watch I also thought he might have given a couple of others a go if only in the interests of giving some players a chance to remain as fit as possible and for others to gain valuable experience. But then McNamara was on coaching staff at Bradford when Nobby was there so I can see where he got his ideas.
Never argue with an idiot. He will bring you down to his level and beat you with experience.

O'Loughlin Faces Late Fitness Test

England and Wigan Captain Sean O'Loughlin will face a late fitness test to decide if he can play in England's second Four Nations game against Australia this weekend in Melbourne.

As is standard practise in the Southern Hemisphere, Steve McNamara has today named his side for this weekend's game however changes are allowed ahead of kick off.

McNamara has initially named an unchanged side.England defeated Samoa 32-26 in the tournament's opening match at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane last Saturday and victory over Australia, who lost to New Zealand in the Brisbane double-header by 30-12, will see England progress through to the Four Nations final in Wellington, New Zealand on Saturday November 15.

O'Louglin is omitted from the initial team however Liam Farrell, Joel Tomkins, Josh Charnley and Matty Smith all retain their places in the starting line-up.

"We have named the same 17 as last week," said McNamara.

"A few of our blokes haven't been able to train fully during the early part of the week.

"Even though we have named the same side, there could be a change or two at the back end of the week.

"Those that were unable to train are making decent progress. Sean O'Loughlin is definitely improving and we will continue to monitor him throughout this week.

"It is really difficult to name a team earlier in the week. Firmer decision will be made towards the weekend, when we arrive in Melbourne.

"It was a hard-fought win for us against Samoa. There is room for improvement within our game. We had to overcome a very talented and tenacious team with limited preparation in extreme heat.

"I was pleased with the way we dug in and found a way to win in extreme circumstances. We will have to show that same resolve this week."

Castleford legend backing England to knock Aussies out

Castleford Rugby League legend Malcolm Reilly OBE believes England are primed and ready to book their place in the final of the 2014 Four Nations by beating Australia in Melbourne on Sunday.

England will go into the match buoyed by an encouraging performance in their opening victory over Samoa, when they defied the lingering effects of jetlag and 30-degree heat to overcome spirited opponents in a 32-26 win.

Australia, by contrast, head for Melbourne looking to bounce back and restore national pride following a surprisingly one-sided 30-12 defeat at the hands of New Zealand.

For Reilly, the former Castleford, Leeds, Newcastle Knights and Great Britain coach whose achievements saw him inducted into the Rugby League Hall of Fame earlier this month, that combination of circumstances leaves England well placed to score a rare win against the world champions.

“I think England played extremely well at the weekend, Samoa are an under-rated side but England got it together and got the result, which was crucial,” said Reilly.

“They can also learn a lot from that performance.

“These sorts of games don’t come around often and it’s not like in the league when there’s always next week: they must focus and concentrate for the full 80 minutes.

“Steve McNamara has put together an impressive team and I think they have a lot of self-belief. I’m sure they will go into the game against Australia full of pride.”

The nature of Australia’s 30-12 defeat to the Kiwis has shocked the 2013 World Cup winners and Reilly believes this is the perfect time for England to strike.

“Australia couldn’t cope with New Zealand at the weekend, they do have a few players out but they are still a force to be reckoned with,” added Reilly. “England do not have the best track record against Australia but I believe they have a good chance to start to change that on Sunday.

“Australia are not as dominating as they have been in previous tournaments and England have a quality side who have the best opportunity in recent years to make it to the final.

“It will be a big challenge but I believe they have what it takes to do the preparation and get it together for the weekend, if they go into the game with a positive attitude, they can beat Australia.”

England v Australia at AAMI Park, Melbourne, will be broadcast live on BBC Two on Sunday November 2 from 4.30am.
