Don't give up

Post by jobo »

Probably a bit masochistic but since 1982, when the Aussies first demonstrated how RL is a game of beauty, skill, courage and intelligence, now is not the time to give up on the world club series, or to be too down about how the 3 games went.

All 3 British sides lost on the score line but the game imo was the winner.

Personally, I'd expand and include the bottom 3 from each league play each other.

Not a chance Jobo; I remember when we had an even bigger WCC comp. Like you I have been there in the old days when we were destroyed by lack of fitness etc. Now, I think the key is how our coaches / player think and their decision making skills. The NRL does not stand still but we probably do and try to copy what the NRL did 3, 4 or 5 years ago.

I am not sure we can sell the WCC even as it is, the attendances whilst good are not amazing. 1 v 1 seems better than expanding it IMO.

I have to agree with the above post. I don't see the point in the other two games a win for Wigan wouldn't have meant anything other than some bragging rights and consolation prize (oh and ticket money for the club and RFL!). Either go back to one v one but perhaps played at a better time or make it into some mini tournament but the risk and probability is that the final will be NRL v NRL. I have read some and agreed with many posts on the subject of Super League v NRL and the coaching and decision making do appear to be better but is that because the players are simply better! Good players make things look easy so its all very good saying they play sensible rugby league and we play dumb rugby league but good opposition will make teams look dumb they will grind you down and make the opposition make mistakes. They have the best players in the world, they pay the top dollar simple. As a result of this they have a very competitive and intense league which not only develops players but the coaches as well as they all try new things to give them that competitive edge. There is no easy game in the NRL season which battle hardens them which is seen in tight games and also international games. How many times have we seen England/GB outwork the Aussies and look on top only for them to snatch it at the death or break away it happens too many times to be called luck.

I like it I'd rather see another mid season game against the Aussies too. Thing is for some it's a rare chance to see players who they may never see play live if it were not for this game. It's a bit of an event too.
