Clueless attack

Post by DaveO »

We have not a clue how to score tries in the last 10 or 20m.

At least three times tonight we had sets of six on their line and we had not got a clue what to do with the ball.

When we got the ball back from the kick off they were in no danger as was the case when they made a mess of another kick off.

Unless Wane can sort this out you can forget trophies. We are averaging 19 points a game and that includes the Leeds game upping the average.

You can't expect to win things with an attack as blunt as ours and it is not a new problem.

I agree with you DaveO, this has been getting worse for the past couple of seasons. If George isn't playing Matty is forced to be more creative and he just can't do it. Any chance we have of winning a trophy this year depends on Sam getting fit and added some variety to our attack. If that doesn't happen we'll win nothing this season despite a good defence and a great deal of effort from the players. I don't know anything about coaching top players but surely a coach can introduce variety / options on attack. When we played Brisbane our players didn't know were to look when we were defending against them.

Somebody said to me tonight that it was either poor coaching or the lack of quality personnel personally I think it is both. We were given an attacking lesson by two of our former halfbacks.

Just written on another thread that we haven't had a move in us since Harris left. Tonight was yet another example of that.

I never put this Widnes success down to Betts, more like Brett Hodgson to me.
Great link play between the halves and full back, is that from Betts or Hodgson do you think?

No it isn't.

The fans can see the balance of the side is wrong and whilst I admit we have players missing the facts remain we have struggled for years without a proper goal kicker, a stupendously average scrum half, returned players who have questionable fitness and a coach with no plan b (amongst other things)

This season we saw Sam and Isa arrive, yet more players left than signed and this constant and incessant weakening of the squad and unwillingness to invest in overseas to add experience and quality really does highlight where this team is going

Where are the clean breaks, the invention, the trickery when we our near the try line. Sadly lacking TBH

Note that 2 of our tries came from basic mistakes (ball allowed to bounce & the interception pass). Widnes deserved this tonite irrespective had we kicked for the 2 points each time after each try

Mentioned in a past post you need Master Locksmiths (plural) to open a Defence lock, we don't have that many. Keep thinking albeit negatively we are where we are table wise cause its a poor league team wise this season (aka Stains & Leeds e.g)

Folks how may of the current squad would be in our best ever Top +50 list? Know some are just young guys (give thewm a chance & all) but you still get my meaning, talent , quality, skill to wear a Wigan shirt

Our defence for 2 of the Widnes trys , player allowed to go between 2 standing close tohether looking at each other, no grab no nothing!

Surrrended our proud Home record tonite. Long way to go but there will be many more twist & turns before Old Trafford (there always is!)

On my jollies but listened live by stream. Could we not draw solace from the game by blaming bad decisions by the officials for our defeat?

Never been the same since Green left and was proved when in his last season when out injured, we were running around then like headless chickens near the try line like we are now.

Will never be any different while we have Williams and Smith together at half back and no proper Stand Off.
