Match report as Wigan Under 19s beat London Broncos Under 19s 40-18 at the Trailfinders Sports Club

Wigan tries from Tom Davies (2), Ollie Partington, Olly Russell, Dec O’Donnell, Sammy Kibula and Sam Grant

Depleted Warriors only had 16 fit players available and finished the game with 12 men

An inexperienced Wigan Warriors Under 19s side comfortably beat London Broncos Under 19s 40-18 at the Trailfinders Sports Club on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors Academy side were with ten regular players owing to international call-ups for seven of the side with Sam Brady (injured) and Jack Higginson and Kyle Shelford involved in first team duty on Friday evening.

Wigan only had 16 fit players and with Aiden Sutton, brother of first team player Ryan, named on the bench but unable to play owing to injury and Assistant Coaches, Martin McLoughling and Darrell Goulding, took charge of the side with Matty Peet in Australia with the England Academy side.

Macauley Davies returned to U19s action after making his first-team debut last week with Sammy Adejumo starting at hooker.

Sadiq Adebiyi, who has played for League 1 sides Hemel Stags and Oxford this season, started at prop and captained the Broncos.

Wigan were on top from the word go with Ollie Partington and Sammy Adejumo getting through some good work up the middle. The Warriors led inside just five minutes after a fine break down the right from centre Sam Grant put Tom Davies over. Jake Moore converted the try and Wigan led 6-0.

The Broncos bounced straight back as just minutes later Tuoyo Egodeo pounced on a Wigan error to run 40 metres and score. Half-back Dan Wellden dragged his conversion meaning Wigan were still 6-4 in front.

Jamie Langley’s Broncos looked unorganised in defence and Wigan soon capitalised. Winger Davies raced 40 metres down the right wing to round the full-back and go over. Moore’s conversion attempt went just wide of the mark but the Warriors were now 10-4 ahead.

Wigan were in complete control and were now attacking at will. Ollie Partington soon stormed onto a flat ball to crash over the line carrying three London players on his back. Moore’s boot extended Wigan’s lead to 16-4 after just 22 minutes.

The capital based side didn’t give up and troubled the Warriors defence with a couple of quick play-the-balls. London hooker Matt Davies then got a good offload away to prop Callum Bustin who barged over the line. Wellden converted to reduce the deficit, but they were still 10-16 behind.

Wigan were enjoying playing some expansive rugby in 30 degrees heat on artificial turf.

The visitors were in for another just minutes before half-time after Barran made a break to find Partington who supplied Olly Russell with the pass to score. Moore added his third conversion of the half and Wigan turned around 22-10 to the good.

HALF TIME: London Broncos U19s 10–22 Wigan Warriors U19s

London were quick out of the blocks in the second half and scored in just the 42nd minute when good pressure forced an error and Wellden latched onto a loose ball to score.

The Broncos really went after Wigan for the next ten minutes but the Warriors held firm in defence and it paid dividends as hooker Dec O’Donnell sold the London defence a sublime dummy to crash over. Moore arrowed his conversion over and Wigan were now 28-14 in front.

Wigan knew another try would kill off the game and they got it on the hour-mark when forward Sammy Kibula crashed over for his 11th try in 12 games. Moments earlier Jake Moore left the field through injury meaning Josh Woods took on the kicking duties and put Wigan 34-14 up.

The young Broncos showed good fight in the final 20 minutes and got their reward when Egodeo caught Wigan napping on the blindside to score his second of the afternoon.

Grant rounded off a clinical display from the Warriors with five minutes left as he intercepted a cut-out pass to outpace the London defenders in an 80 metre sprint to score. Woods added the conversion to seal a comfortable 40-18 win.

Wigan ended the game with 12 men due to Jake Moore, Jack McHugh, Olly Russell and Dec O’Donnell not being able to continue.

Proud Effort

Wigan Warriors Under 19s Assistant Coach, Darrell Goulding, on Wigan’s 40-18 win at London Broncos

Tom Davies and Paddy Casey shine for Goulding

“I can’t fault the effort the lads put in!” Darrell Goulding

Wigan Warriors Under 19s Assistant Coach Darrell Goulding said he was ‘proud’ of the team’s effort in their 40-18 win at London Broncos.

The Cherry and Whites finished the game with 12 men and only had three available subs throughout the game but put in a tough shift and came away with the two points.

Tries from Ollie Partington, Olly Russell and a brace from Tom Davies put the Warriors into a 22-10 lead at the break.

Wigan scored three further tries in the second-half thanks to Dec O’Donnell, Sammy Kibula and Sam Grant as they sealed a 40-18 win in the capital.

“I can’t fault the effort the lads put in.” Goulding said. “To be down to 12 men and to go against such physical athletes in the London side and come away with a win is great because London played very well.

“It was a challenge for our young lads though because they had to do big minutes which is a test but they will be better for it.

“There is still a lot to work on from that performance because we were quite off compared to our standards but it is two points at an important stage of the season now so we will take it with the young side that we had out.” he added.

Goulding was full of praise for three of his players for their determined performances, he said: “I think Tom Davies and Paddy Casey were reliable. They did what they do every week which is working hard, good attitude and you can never fault their effort or performance.

“Sammy Kibula has got a lot of good things in his game. He is a strong runner and can run good lines. He is a bit of a fan favourite already when we play at Orrell and he will get there but he has got a lot of hard work in front of him but I think it was a collective effort overall.”

Next up for the Under 19s is a fixture against North East Thunder Regional Academy at the Fairhurst Accountants Community Stadium, Orrell on Saturday 23rd July, 2pm kick-off.

I moved to Australia in 2013 and used to love visiting Edgehall Road to watch the youngsters. Having lost touch with the youngsters who are the best prospects to watch out for?
