Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Is it just me who thinks the refs were better back in days of Ashley Klein and Russell Smith?

Russell Smith certainly. Not so sure about Clown Klein.moto748 wrote:Is it just me who thinks the refs were better back in days of Ashley Klein and Russell Smith?
Regarder une fille en bikini, c'est comme avoir un revolver chargé sur sa table:
Il n'y a rien de mal a ça mais il est difficile de penser à autre chose.
Now Europe is just for holidays.

Re: Referee for Saturday
There was a time when we had to tolerate refs like Eric Clay and Billy Thompson et al whose attitude was that rugby was a medium for us supporters to watch them and not the two teams.moto748 wrote:Is it just me who thinks the refs were better back in days of Ashley Klein and Russell Smith?
They did believe they were the star performers and they later made a good living on the 'Sportsman Evening Circuit' relating how they handled certain players and always came out best.
I think today's refs are more in tune with the players, they certainly are fitter and overall are fairer. As long as they still get respect from the players by not treating them as delinquent kids, we'll do all right with the current crop.

Re: Referee for Saturday
In the NRL, am I correct in saying, that the referees towards the end of the game,
75 - 80 minutes, do not decide the outcome of a game?

Re: Referee for Saturday
I don't think it's the amount of penalties, straw, excluding the Hull FC away game, it's the incompetence of some of the decisions from referees & the inaction of the touch judges when the see infringements but neglect to inform the referee. No straw damn us wrote:Are you sure?ddtftf wrote:Thank God its not Bentham

I've never seen Liam Farrell abuse a referee before that Hull game, when he wasn't the only one who was frustrated with the (non) decisions in that game
My other pet hate is the "try/no try" fiasco! It is absolutely ridiculous. If the referee says he "thinks" it's a try, even if it's not, the video referee then has to find something to go against the on field decision, which they very rarely do even if it is definitely 'no try'!

It's a weird one. In a way, I kinda share your doubts, Josie, but, on the other hand, they have basically the same system in the NRL, and it seems to work pretty well there. Probably because their video ref system is more efficient and quicker, so at least you feel (well, I do, anyhow) that the right decision has been reached,
