Liam Marshall looks ahead to Wigan Warriors' opening game and discusses the dynamic between him and Jake Wardle

Liam Marshall believes the differences in personality between him and Jake Wardle will help them form a strong partnership.

The winger will link up with Wigan Warriors’ new addition on the left side this season, starting with a trip to Craven Park to face Hull KR on Saturday (K.O. 1pm).

Marshall states Matty Peet’s side are determined to build on what they did last year in order to enjoy more success.

I’m really looking forward to it now,” he said.

Pre-season is the same for everyone, it’s a big slog and you feel like you’re training for the sake of it, but now we get to do what we’re paid for as rugby players.

“Hull KR is a tough place to go.

They’ve made some good signings and will be raring to go, like we are.

“We want to start off on a high so hopefully we can go there and do a professional job to get the two points.

“We laid some good foundations as a club last year both on and off the field, and hopefully we can build on that.

The Challenge Cup was a real high point, but the play-offs at the end were disappointing, so hopefully that is something we can put right this year.

We’ve been working on a few things, and it’s exciting.

“We’ve had a good block of having the whole team in and not having too many injuries, so it’s been good to get those combinations together and work on a few new things.

“You build up for this first game, so hopefully we can implement stuff and test the waters with a good performance.

I’ve got Jake (Wardle)- the new signing- on my side, and he’s slotting in well.

“He’s really bought into what we do at Wigan.

“He’s a really quiet lad, which is probably the opposite to me, but that’s why we are working quite well together.

“I do most of the speaking and he lets his actions do the talking.

I think he’s really enjoying himself at Wigan, and hopefully we can get the best out of him on the field.

“On his day, he’s probably one of the best centres in the comp, and he’ll be thinking that himself.”

PETERS’ NAMES 21-MAN SQUAD FOR WIGAN OPENER

Willie Peters and his coaching staff have named their 21-man squad for the Robins’ season opener against Wigan Warriors this Saturday.

Hull KR could have as many as six debuts in their rematch against the Warriors with NRL imports, Tom Opacic, Sauaso Sue and Rhys Kennedy named alongside the Robins’ Super League signings, Sam Luckley, Louis Senior and James Batchelor.

The Robins’ talismanic halfback, Jordan Abdull will look to make his first Super League start since last April after suffering a quad injury late in the side’s Challenge Cup Semi-final defeat to Huddersfield and missing the rest of 2022. Abdull will slot into KR’s rejuvenated spine alongside a returning Will Dagger with Lachlan Coote, Matt Parcell Jez Litten and Mikey Lewis all vying for places.

Last time out, a youthful Hull KR saw off Wigan 38-28 having met in the season opener for the 2022 season. Peters’ Robins will look to hit the ground running as they face the Warriors in front of a packed Sewell Group Craven Park with indie rock band, the K’s playing the teams out.

I'm guessing 1 to 13 pick themselves with the exception of KPP for Isa. And 14 to 17 likewise with Isa for KPP. If so, could be a long hard haul for Mago this season.

I’d have Mago on the bench with Havard, ONeill assuming he goes with Singo & Byrne as starters and have a hunch Ida may be the 4th sub as can cover centre if needed.

I think we'll start with Cooper and Byrne rather than Singleton.
