St Peter’s crowned inaugural Warriors Cup champions

Post by josie andrews »

WIGAN WARRIORS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION HOSTED THE INAUGURAL 9-A-SIDE WARRIORS CUP COMPETITION AT ROBIN PARK ARENA.

More than 130 Year 7 boys from seven local schools took part in the tournament on Wednesday 8 March, which saw St Peter’s High School ‘A’ crowned champions.

10 school teams competed in round robin fixtures across the day as St Peter’s ‘A’ finished first in Pool A whilst St John Fisher topped Pool B.

The four highest ranked sides from each pool progressed to the knockout stage of the competition before St Peter’s ‘A’ were crowned Warriors Cup champions after defeating Deanery ‘A’ in the final.

Speaking on the tournament, Wigan Warriors Community Foundation Community Development Officer, Tom Marsh, said: “It was great to be able to organise and plan the first ever 9-a-side Warriors Cup Competition.

“The standard of rugby on show was amazing which is a real credit to the school teachers for giving up their time to help coach the players and get them to the great standard they are at.

“The event was a real pleasure to organise, and I cannot wait to host the Y7 Boys event next year in addition to more age groups and genders.

“I would like to congratulate St Peter’s ‘A’ on winning the first ever Warriors Cup, and we send our best wishes ahead of the Champion Schools Final at Wembley Stadium.”

St Peter’s High School teacher, Mr Ashton, added: “Thank you to Wigan Warriors Community Foundation for organising and inviting us to the inaugural Wigan Warriors 9’s Festival.

“Both our teams had a fantastic time competing against other schools from across the borough and there was lots of excellent rugby on show.”

High schools that competed: St Peter’s, St Edmund Arrowsmith, Shevington, Deanery, St John Fisher, Up Holland, and Cansfield.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
