BWSL: ROUND 3 ROUND UP

Post by josie andrews »

The Betfred Women’s Super League kicked back into action this weekend with four teams celebrating important wins as the season starts to intensify.

Leeds Rhinos ended York Valkyrie's 14-match unbeaten run in the Super League to keep pace with leaders Wigan Warriors at the top of the table.

The Rhinos came out 16-10 victors at the LNER Community Stadium and live on The Sportsman - gaining revenge for their defeat by the Valkyrie in last season's Grand Final.

Tries from Shona Hoyle and Caitlin Beevers and four Ruby Enright goals saw Lois Forsell’s side home after Eboni Partington had put the home side ahead and Lacey Owen had gone over to put York within one score.

Wigan Warriors extended their unbeaten run in style with a thumping 102-point win at Huddersfield Giants. Mary Coleman scored five tries and Anna Davies claimed a hat-trick as the visitors registered 18 tries.

The victory piled the misery on the struggling Giants, who could not offer a response and are now without a win so far this season.

St Helens produced a dominant display against Featherstone Rovers on Saturday - Faye Gaskin got Saints off the mark while Erin Stott contributed to their tally having run the length of the field for their second try.

Vicky Whitfield and captain Jodie Cunningham then went over to take the score to 24-0 inside the first 30 minutes with Saints continuing their blistering form throughout to eventually defeat Rovers 58-4.

Warrington Wolves were on the end of a 68-0 thrashing by Leeds in their previous outing but they grabbed their second win of the season against newly-promoted Barrow Raiders.

The Cumbrian outfit made it tough for the home side, but Dani Bound's slick feet carried her over the line for the opener with Charlie Magraw converting for a 6-0 half-time lead.

Barrow levelled through Vanessa Temple, but Warrington took advantage of an accidental off-side close to their own line which gave Abi Johnston the opportunity to win it 10-6.

Round 4 of the Betfred Women's Super League will kick off on Friday 24 May when St Helens host Leeds Rhinos at the Totally Wicked Stadium live on The Sportsman (KO 5.30pm).

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
