Welsh rugby and the BBC

A good piece on BBC sport online today on Welsh rugby (league of course).

The Beeb cops a lot of criticism about it's RL coverage, sometimes justified, but this is great stuff from the national broadcaster.

Excellent article. I think building from the bottom up is the only sustainable approach to eventually having a competitive Welsh team (or two) in Super League. They are rugby mad in Wales which should also provide a boost to the grass roots game there.

I agree that the bottom-up approach is best.

As for the Welsh love for "rugby": of course union is the traditional game. But I remember matches at Cardiff and the good number of Welsh folk who attended. Also a World Cup match at Old Trafford, where we were next to a group of 8 to 10 Welsh supporters who sang "Land of my Fathers" in Welsh. So the potential support is there imo.

Making this amateur league season short to fit the union closed season is also the right way to go to encourage union players to give league a try (pun intended).
