Penalty Try comment
Penalty Try comment
Just a thought…
When Zach Eckersley scored his try as Kendall sent it for review he said if it wasn’t a try it would be a penalty try.
Presumably because of an early tackle by Toby King, if that was the case why didn’t King get binned? Surely it doesn’t matter that Zach scored he still committed a ‘professional foul’?

Re: Penalty Try comment
Obviously I didn't hear Kendall's comment but said to Mrs SS at the time that if it wasn't a try - it had to be a penalty try.
It might be time to change the Laws so that even if the try is given - the kick should be in front of the posts if a penalty try would otherwise have been the outcome. It might stop desperate and dangerous tackles and foul play and avoid injury. I'ts noticeable that hardly ever does the foul on the scoring player result in a sin-binning or extra penalty award.

Re: Penalty Try comment
For me, it was an 8-point try, but this seems to have disappeared from the game. We score a try despite the foul play, so should have still got the option of the additional penalty.
Re: Penalty Try comment
That's what I thought. Foul play in the act of scoring is an 8 point try no? Anyone got clarification on the rules here?Jonathon Kerr (JK) wrote: ↑Sun Jun 09, 2024 3:56 pm For me, it was an 8-point try, but this seems to have disappeared from the game. I picked up on this too.
Kendall said something like "just check if he grounded it as if he didn't I am going to award a penalty try".
I remember thinking that it would be an advantage if he didn't ground the ball then.
Kick under the posts as opposed to out wider.
Where was the benefit to Wigan of actually scoring the try?

This is under the section Penalty Kick:
Offence against Try scorer 9. If a player fouls an opponent who is touching down for a try, a penalty kick at goal shall be taken from in front of the goal posts after the attempt to convert the try. After his kick has been taken the ball shall be deemed dead and play shall be restarted from the halfway line. This law applies to the period during which the ball is touched down for a try and not to any subsequent period.

But Eckersley wasn't fouled when touching down for the try so I am still confused as to why Kendall could have awarded a penalty try if Eckersley had not grounded the ball.Jonathon Kerr (JK) wrote: ↑Sun Jun 09, 2024 4:31 pm This is under the section Penalty Kick:

However saying what he did about awarding a penalty try like everyone else I am also confused as to why he didn't.
I really don't think he needed to go to the screen anyway. I am sure he knew it was touched down properly but these days they seem to want to have everything but the most obvious score checked.

Re: Penalty Try comment
If a penalty try had been awarded then young Eckersley’s name would not have gone down in the record books.
