Warrington Wolves suffered a 25-14 loss to a brilliant Salford Red Devils just six days after losing the Challenge Cup Final and Sam Burgess has referenced that “tiny hangover” as one of the reasons why his side lost.
Salford turned up from the first whistle and blitzed Warrington in the first half leaving Sam Burgess stunned with his side 19-0 down at halftime thanks to brilliant work on the break by the Red Devils.
Tries from Nene Macdonald, Marc Sneyd and a Deon Cross brace took Salford to victory and handed them the two points to go level on points with Warrington in Super League.
The inevitable question was asked of Sam Burgess, ‘How did the Challenge Cup Final affect the performance?’, to which the Englishman attributed a portion of the blame as he labelled it a “tiny hangover” before calling on his players to “get over” the Wembley defeat.
Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, Sam Burgess stated: “I think there’s always going to be a tiny hangover from the final last week, we had one day to prep really and they’ve had two weeks.
“There were three long-range tries in the first half when we were actually executing our gameplan well early in the game. I thought we controlled the possession well, we just ultimately saw a couple of moments go and they scored 18 points.
That’s a lot against Salford, they’re a pretty gritty side, they know how to defend and they can cause you trouble. We’ve got a bit to learn again.”
Pushed further on how his team stacked up compared to last week at Wembley when Wigan Warriors swept Warrington aside, Sam Burgess labelled it an improvement but ultimately called on players to move on from the Wembley woes.
Burgess said: “I thought areas of our game were better this week than last week. We’ve got to move forward, we’ve got to get over Wembley. We’ve got eight days until Hull now so we’ll get out of this game what we need to.
“The players have got to move on too, alright? No one else is feeling sorry for us. The players have got to move on, it’s my job to get them going.”
The loss to Salford means Warrington now have nine wins from fourteen games and are officially past the halfway stage of the Super League campaign. Asked how his side have fared for the first half of the season, Burgess was blunt in his assessment.
“Well you’ve just asked me after three losses, we’ve got a bit of work to do. It starts tomorrow morning.”
On a positive note for Wire fans, it had been revealed before the game by Sky Sports’ Jenna Brooks that Warrington are actually one of the teams that are interested in signing Leeds Rhinos star Rhyse Martin.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

We had a big hangover our game at the jungle was hard work.
The only blessing was, it didn’t rain, only spits anyway, the beautiful sunset & the two points

Brilliant. All going to plan until they got those lucky 18 or 19 points! Right out of the Daryl Powell songbook.

His biggest mistake was making out that he had learned all he wanted about wigan ,after the league game.To me it was a silly comment that stank of arrogance

Oh the game was dreadful at Cas Josie no mistaking that but to me Warrington where far worse the problems Powell had are perhaps still there yes he’s a big name and that gets you so far but now comes the hard part because they really are struggling against the “big” sides when they come up against them.josie andrews wrote: ↑Sat Jun 15, 2024 8:34 amWe had a big hangover our game at the jungle was hard work.

Next week Wire are away at Hull FC.
Wire should win there but if they don't then questions really will be asked.
